EU Wants To Spark Power Line Standards
Using power lines to transmit data at high speeds is one of those concepts that have been discussed for several years. Now it looks like the European Union is working to bring some focus to many disparate efforts.
Recently more than 35 European energy companies, telecommunications equipment manufacturers, consultancies and universities headed for Madrid to hammer out details of the four-year EU-sponsored project. The first phase, lasting two years, has a budget of $24.8 million and it aims to develop a uniform European PLC (power line communications) standard. "We currently have a number of proprietary systems in use around Europe, each with their strengths and weakness," said Michael Koch, a member of the initiative. "For power line communications to become a viable business, standardization is essential."
