Mast microwave link

Hi, how can you tell which cell mast is the main hub with fibre connection?

Here is a picture of one im connecting to which looks like a hub mast except one of the microwave links seems to point at an even bigger mast?

other mast

It could differ by operator tbh. For example I’m a hub site for Three and EE but the microwaves are only used for EE. This one seems as if they are both hub sites. The second mast is 5G, which operator is it? My guess is three. Which ever opearator has 5G on that mast it will be the other that uses the microwave links.

I believe Three would like to have all their 5G sites (the ones with 100Mhz deployed at least) to use hardwired backhaul (at multiple Gbps), however MW is certainly capable of high transmission speeds.
(admittedly lower speed links are likely in use today)

However, there are a lot more variables to factor in for MW over hardwired - have a glance through this if you have the time.

The first mast is ee/three band 3 and 20

Second mast is ee/three/voda/o2 This has three 5g.

I have done a few speedtests with three and get 55-77ms pings. Does this indicate a microwave link?

On ee pings were 21-33ms maybe just a better network?

Not necessarily tommyk, my three mast is microwave linked and my pings are always in the low 30's.

Three have 50ms average ping in their network as they have DPI (deep packet inspection). This was implemented back in the days of limited mobile hotspot to detect when hotspot or general mobile data is being used. This adds a few ms ping on. If you use a tunnel you get faster pings as no DPI.

It is 5G, but I think we concluded that it wasn't lit-up yet, possibly due to waiting for hardwired backhaul to go in first.
Oh yes I remember you saying that now Gavin, it's been like that for a long time now.

Yeah, I had to check back in PMs to remember, but given that Three's coverage checker doesn't show any 5G there its pretty obvious they haven't turned it on yet - just a shame that the hardware is being wasted at the moment

Yes it is indeedy Gavin, quite surprised they fitted 5G so early, unless some things needed replacing and thought they may as well do the 2 jobs at once.
