Max line speed

The MAX BB speed i can get is 1Mbps with tiscali but now thank god my contract is nearly over after a month of 4kbps BB im looking for a new ISP. Ive looked at a few and BT tell me that my max line speed is 0.5Mbps most of the others dont actually give me a value just a bunch of 'Up to 8Mbps' options. I find 0.5kbps BB wrong becouse with discali i do speedtests and it says 1008Kbps and i download at an avarage 130Kbps. Sometimes when i start downloads it occasionally reachers 200+ Kbps DL speed which is close to 2Meg BB (Is this just an error or is it because tiscali block it?) I was wondering if i registered with a new provider on an 'Up to 2Mbps' package would it give me 2Mbps or would it give me what they think it right (0.5).

Also whats the best ISP to go with i live about 2 miles away from my exchange http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange.php?ecode=SWCAB.

thanks for any info :)

Post your modem routers line stats in this thread to help us see the condition of your line.

Also it might be worth doing a speed test from the test socket which is located behind the BT master faceplate. The lowe half unscrews.

Here's my routers ADSL Status Page :)

That line is capable of only about 1250kb/s i.e. more or less what you have.

Is you router/modem connected into your BT Master socket and perhaps you can consider following Kitz details here > http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/troubleshooting.htm and test your line stats in the "Test" port on your master to see if they improve when you isolate your internal wiring.

However with that attenuation I suspect you aren't going to achieve an awful lot more than 1.5Mb/s unless your internal wiring is shocking.

That to me looks like its on about 20metres of extension cabling, put it in the master test socket and then post the stats again.

Ok yeah ill give it a go, Got a 10M RJ45 cable from router cos my PC is nowhere near socket and then the router isnt plugged into master socket its about another 8M away from it as the master socket is in some1 elses bedroom :(, Ill have to use the 10M cable still with it in master socket cos i aint got a shorter one long enough.

attenuation: 60.7 (In master test socket with 10M cable) -so for some reson it got worse.

Cat-5 extension cables (RJ-45) or Network cables won't make a difference. The important bit is the tail cable from the router to the BT socket.

Are you sure it is the Master socket in the bedroom. I don't think I've ever seen the house master installed in a bedroom. More typically it is the hallway, or in some three storey houses the garage when it is at ground level.

Bedrooms are typically extension sockets and won't help rule out your internal cabling as being the issue.

I'd suggest checking your router stats in the test socket if you have that sort of master (pictured below)

Your stats page looks like it is from a conexant accessrunner chipset based router such as an Origo or old Safecom samr, I've read that they don't perform as well as more modern routers with more recent chipsets on ADSL max. I've got one somewhere but I have to admit I've never tried it on other than a fixed 1mbps connection.

Yeah it was a cheap conexant router off ebay, Getting good a wireless one soon tho when i can afford. I did try in that socket in that pic and i got 60.7, But thanks for help guys ill see what happens with a more modern router :)

The master socket is in the bedroom the one in the hall by front door has no test socket one upstairs has got it, The bedroom is near where the telephone wire enters the house, The tail cable is about 3 Meters.

It shouldn't be your router as Annex A is capable of the following:

ITU G.992.1 Annex A ADSL over POTS 12 Mbit/s 1.3 MBit/s

which is standard IpStream ADSL in the UK, but a different router might be slightly better...

You sure about those speeds with 992.1 think you mean 992.3

I think the samr-4114 supports a maximum of 8mbps down, 1mbps up. I guess I should have been clearer and said that my understanding was that conexant access runner chipset routers don't perform as well as more modern ones on longer lines. Possibly because newer ADSL chipsets require fewer discrete components.

Has anyone noticed that routers with the conexant chipset doesn't sync as high as other routers, i've got a BT Voyager USB modem here and on my MAX ADSL line i get a sync of 4700, but with my Origo 8400 router i get a sync of 3800 with exactly the same line stats, actually the line attenuation goes down by about 8 with the USB modem compared to the router, but the SNR remains the same.

I was looking at some ones wireless the other day and they are at 52db attenuation at 1meg with a SNR of 16 with a BT 2100 router, I put a speedtouch on there and the SNR shot up to 28 db with no errors. If that was a max connection that would be over 3meg sync speed easy a new router that wasnt designed just for fixed rate lines would be the way to go.

Make sure you have Microfilters on EVERY extension socket in the house, especially the master. Though from the sounds of it you have the master socket in your hall without a face plate then extends to the bedroom. Unfortunately without doing any rewiring your pretty much stuck.

If you have to use a RJ11 (modem cable) try and find a copper one, most cheap...well the majority of modem cables/telephone extension cables are aluminium and DSL doesnt like that flavour ;)

As mentioned before try a Speedtouch modem or if you go MAX make sure you get a non conexant or texas instruments chipset, broadcom is usually best/tends to work better (IMHO) with MAX DSL BT lines.

Hope this helps.
