MC801A And smarty sim 5g issue

Hey all,

So currently using the zyxtel on Three 30 day rolling contract and things have been going g well. Got email about price hike which making me think of switching.

Now I have in the past before my current set up ordered the mc801a with a smarty sim. However each time I have tried that smarty sim in the mc801a I don’t get 5G. Even though I get 5G on my current set up.

I have and probably to the annoyance of Amazon bought and returned the mc801a back due to this. Not sure what’s going on. As I don’t know if it’s a setting issue I had to switch on the mc801a for the 5g to work.

I mean I did also in the past order the mc801a from 3 with the 3 sim included and that had no issues with going into 5g straight away.

Thanks in advance

I have an MC801a that works with 5G on a Three SIM and a Smarty SIM (which you would expect, as Smarty uses Three). I don't even need to change the APN when I've swapped SIMs.

Have you tried the Smarty SIM in a mobile? Maybe they haven't activated 5G on your account, I had this issue with a Lebara SIM some time back where for some reason I had to phone them to get them to enable 5G on my SIM.

If a smarty SIM is active, it will be able to connect to 5G - there isn't a specific setting to turn it on on the account or the likes.

You would assume that to be the case and I had Lebara SIMs previously that worked straight away with 5G but it was my most recent one where they had to 'activate' 5G on the account (I was getting 4G+ just fine).

I'd say a good test would be to put the smarty SIM in another device/smart phone and see if he gets 5G then. If not, then it could be an account thing like my Lebara. If he's getting 5G with Three already then I don't see what else it could be.

What i’m trying to get at is that three don’t have a ‘5G bar’ as such like Vodafone has in place, so it should just work if the sim is active and works with 4G & 3G

Fair enough, I hadn't even realised Voda had a 5G 'barring' in place. Presumably Lebara don't bar 5G as a rule but my latest SIM was legacy or something. If you're sure Three don't have one then I wonder what else it could be. I guess the answer would be to buy another mc801a and try again, as for sure Smarty will work on 5G where a Three SIM would.

I have a proper Three Business SIM in my MC801A, but when I put my phone's 5G SMARTY SIM in, it works straight off the bat at the same speeds as my 3 SIM. Strange it won't work here.
