Microfilters- line use

I used to have 2 BT phone lines, one is ceased now (wires still in house). If I get the 2nd line re-activated can I use that for just the computer with no Microfilter or voice/telephone calls - will it be better reliability for net access?

The original line (on dialup now) has lots of wires in the house and 4 phones.

So the 2nd line would have only the computer, and short wiring in house.

Is this a plan? Is it unnecessary expense having 2 lines. Worried that phone circuit on so many filters will be crap and a fault liability.

Was a datacomms engineer, appreciate trade off between quality and speed, but old industrial filters/muxes were £10,000 not £6-£10 !!!

Your thoughts please before I jump into broadband land (Exchange due Feb 2005)

One line should be ok for your needs. Not having voice on the line will make no difference to ADSL performance.

Having 4 phones should be ok. Just check your extension wiring is in good condition. You can either filter each phone or you could run a seperate feed from the BT master socket for your ADSL you would then only need a single filter at the master socket for your voice extensions.

The only circumstances where having 4 phones might cause a problem is if you were at the very limit of ADSL and a long way from the exchange.

Thanks

I like the option of one filter for the phones cable with a new one for the ADSL - thanks very much, didn't know you could do that. Just what I needed, I'll start planning which carpet/floorboard to dig up before its really cold!

Can I ask another?

If I get a connection from isp "xyz" with all the hardware, would the same filter work with another modem/router/isp ?

Thanks again.

A filter should work with any modem. AS you are going to fit it at the Master socket I would suggest you get a resonable quality one. If you wanted it really neat and tidy you could get the BT Faceplate style one which has a filter built in. Fitting the filter at the master socket can help reduce any possible noise pickup and feed back on to the line. This approach is the best for those on marginal lines.

Just avoid the very cheap no name filters.

Sorted now - thanks

All I need now is to sort out an isp, I've seen other topics for discussing with/out filter or h/w included options and the compare table. See what Xmas offers come up I supose. Thanks very much for quick replies. That's all folks.
