Mobile Broadband Backup Network?

Hey folks,
Hope you’re all well.
So, three / ee have been doing some work for the past few days in the local area and it’s majorly disrupted the 4G and 5G data connection.
Since me and my partners phones are on three, and also our 5g modem… it’s left us digitally stranded at home.
Can I ask what backup sims everyone else has just incase their main network goes down?

Ultimately you're limited to 4 MNOs in the UK, so I guess I'd personally check which signal (maybe speed) is better; Vodafone or O2?

Giffgaff. Chosen as you can load £10 and then send a text every few months to keep the card alive. When you really need it as a replacement you load a one of their 'goody bags'.

There are lots of one month cards around. What you don't want is to find it gets deactivated after six months lack of use. As I see it Giffgaff is the cheapest to keep alive.

Think o2 round near us, vodaphone hasn’t got 5g in the area.

Thanks for the info…! What network is giffgaff on?

Take a look at the list of MVNOs, those + O2, are your options.

O2! You may have an answer 😄
Haha yes it seems I might do! Just need to find out how much discount I can get on Tesco mobile and I think it’ll either be them or giffgaff. Thanks for your help 👍

I've stuck with Three and Smarty. I know they both use the same network but I am fortunate in having two or three separate masts that I can hook up to. Unless the whole network goes down I can get a service. I've been using mobile internet for three years and despite the nearest mast having work done on it I've always managed to connect to another for a reduced service.

Dan,

Think not only about your current problem but how you are going to have a backup if it is OK soon and dies in a year.

You really need a reserve card you can keep valid even when not using it. If anyone has a better idea than Giffgaff then take it. You don't want a Tesco mobile card that they withdraw if you stop using it - surely?

Wasn’t sure of the requirements for a Tesco sim… giffgaff sim is on route! Do you just top up say £15 for a 30gb goldenbag send a text every two months and the 30gb stays until it’s used up?

The o2 gurus will advise you on this but my understanding is that you put 'credit' on your card and use it bit by bit to send texts to keep it alive beyond the cut off time of six months.

You will need a goodybag to cover your present lack of broadband. But "All goodybags last for one month;" whereas "You can also use credit, instead of a goodybag, on a pay as you go basis. Unused credit will stay in your account until you’ve used it up.

Hope I am right but there are enough folk around here to challenge if not !!

A giffgaff sim will stay live for six months without top up.
If you purchase any goodybag, it exists for a max of 30 days, but if you used the goodybag in a few days, you can immediately purchase another one.

While the goodybag is active, you can also use all of o2's 8,000 wifi hotspots:
10GB allowance

So to keep the sim active, the cheapest goodybag is £6 every six months, or £1 a month in theory.
alternatively you can add credit to the sim.
