Mobile phones 'alter human DNA'

Radio waves from mobile phones do harm body cells and damage DNA, a laboratory study has shown.
But the European Union-funded Reflex research did not prove such changes were a risk to human health.

The scientists behind the study, which has not been published in a journal, said more work was needed to see the actual effect of the phones on health.

But the UK National Radiological Protection Board said people should not be worried by the study's findings.

A spokesman said the study had not shown the biological changes led to disease.

It always amazes me that you see endless people protesting about Mobile Radio Masts being put up but the same people are quite happy to use mobile phones.

The simple fact is the field strength from the mobile phone is thousands of times stronger then you will get from any Mast (Well unless you decide to climb up on one). You also have the phone a few millmetres away from your brain. If there is any risk it is from the Phones not the tranmitters.

Strange thing as well is TV transmitters have been around for years blasting out RF at up to 1MW but no one worries about them

Some good points Web Buddy.

My concern is that we are the guinea pigs and the experiment may take 20 years before we have a result!

My wife and I have phones but we hardly use them. We do not let our daughter use the mobiles at all.

I have not at a quick search found what the tranmitter poer is in a typical mobile handset. I have seen on a forum a figure of 0.75W to 1W but I suspect the person was confused. That figure sounds to high it is more likely the total power consumption of the Handset not the output power although its the erp that would be more importent with the sort of aerial on a handset though there is probably not a lot of difference between output power & erp
My guess is its probably in the region of 10mW to 50mW.

A typically base station has a power of a 100W but that will drop to milliwatts within a few metres. There must be some charts somewhere showing how the power drops off with distance.

They'd probably be the first to complain if they couldn't get a decent signal too :D

I guess in part it is lack of understanding of the inverse square rule, but mainly because the masts are big ugly imposing things therefore they must be harmful, unlike their cute tiny phones.

It is hypocritical for parents etc to campaign against masts and then furnish their children with a mobile :(

I am cynical enough nowadays to believe that if there was negative evidence against mobile phones that it would be kept quiet. Just look at the about of money involved!
