Modem Mode on Hub 5x

Jumping over to the forum following a comment I made on the main site about the Hub 5x not having a working modem mode.

Anyone know how to get it working?

FWIW - I have tried to enable it using the URL to the "hidden" page. When I first got the hub, enabling Modem Mode here literally did nothing.

I have tried it again more recently, and although my Hub now reboots and the LED on the front turns green - my UDM-PRO doesn't seem to be able to get an IP address from the Virgin Media network. I have left it for 10 mins, tried different ports (although would prefer to stick to the 10Gbps port).

I've also gone as far as spoofing the mac address of the Hub.

I'll be honest, I was under the impression the feature to enable it wasn't even in the firmware yet hence the hidden page - but interested to hear from others.

its as easy as putting it to modem mode and done, ask @Martyn as he does the same router as you since you are on XGSPON network with VM.

Will be keen to see someone confirm it actually works - see a lot of folks claim it does but no solid proof. With it being available to me shortly - am keen to see this feature working!

Yer totally agree, hence my post :p . I've tried loads of things to try and get it working, but alas - no luck so far.

Not gonna lie, was a little disappointed when my service went live in August and found I couldn't enable Modem Mode. I have all Ubiquiti kit in my house (UDM-Pro, Switches and several AP's) so prefer to use that over using ISP provided kit.

Having to resort to double NAT'ing for the moment, which while not the best - is workable for the moment. Would much prefer a working modem mode though.

the hub only sends this information when it first connects (not constant from what I've read), it sends 2 different IPs, I can't remember which ones right now, but I do remember reading an excellent article about it, It is a bit picky but I think it always has been, have got it to work but not with a UDM Pro, only an ASUS modem, would love a UDM though, you using SFP I assume too?

I assume it works by just running ethernet into the UDP Pro and not using the DHCP features?

Apparently, its something the engineers can setup too, as they asked me if I wanted it once they see my mini rack setup, I love ubiquitin stuff but trying my hardest to venture out of it, Unifi Pro AP looks nice and neat up on the ceiling though.

I'm not too bothered by dual NAT - that would allow me to still do my fancy Dual WAN behind that anyway as I've currently got VDSL and Starlink. Would of course prefer not to have it!

So am I right in understanding that you currently have a 5X working in Modem Mode with your ASUS Router?

And yes, i'm using a 10G-BaseT SFP+ module to establish a 10Gbps link between the Hub 5X and the UDM-PRO - that bit seems to be solid considering it's a "compatible" from Amazon.

Yer, i'm currently using the 5X in "Router mode", have got the firewall, wireless and DHCP disabled on it though.

The direct link does not work on the HUB 5x.

You'll need to wait for VM to release a new firmware that supports modem mode.

Any update on this? I’ve seen posts as long as 5 months ago asking for modem mode on the 5X. I tried the URL but like Ashtag it just kills all the ports.

So we had an area outage last week that lasted several hours (Virgin Hub 5X just flashing a blue light).

My first time contacting VM technical support, so wasn't really expecting much when I called. Was pleasantly surprised when I hit a UK call centre and was even patched through to the "Hub 5x Trial Team" after answering a few questions.

Turns out the outage was caused by "VM deploying an update" and the tech informed me that is what the blue flashing light meant on the Hub 5x (not totally convinced on that one).

Thinking that this may be the answer to my "Modem Mode" prayers, I asked when "Modem Mode" was coming, to which I got the response "it's a highly requested feature for the 5x and it IS on the list, due to be available in a few months".

So, looks like it'll be some point next year then!

Great news, well done for finding that out

Damn, that's honestly pathetic, but if your proper FTTP, you can plug it directly into a UDM Pro I hear with the right SFP+ adapter

No port forwarding? Didn't think it was behind CGNAT...?
