From my testing and what I have read from others, you never get a DHCP lease from VM in modem mode on the Hub 5x

I have been successful getting modem mode to work on the 5x using the http://192.168.0.1/?page=modemmode hack took me a couple of attempts first had to disable DMZ,DHCP and UpnP then enable modem mode quickly unplug anything else connected to it and then hook up port 1 to my PFSense router.

I then got a public IP after a couple of mins.
It is very hit and miss whether it works or not.

Of course there is always the WAS-110 I’m waiting for mine to arrive hopefully in August from the June Group buy on the 8311 discord community.
Then the HUB 5x can go back into its box 😂

I've never got it to work, so have lived with double NAT for now.

That said, I did discover the world of WAS-110 over the weekend and have already ordered one - should hopefully arrive in the next two weeks!

I've even re-routed my fibre in anticipation! Virgin would only install in my Living Room, whereas i've ran a new fibre from the outside box to where my comms rack is.

How much was the WAS-110? and what you putting it into?

The WAS-110 I got of the group buy cost me £140 due to be delivered August and believe the next group buy should be around September time.

I have also ordered another one for a friend from Fibre Mall https://www.fibermall.com/sale-460693-xgspon-onu-sfp-stick.htm which cost £160 although I am a bit concerned about the warranty on it.

You can also get it from ECI Networks in Canada which is a bit more expensive https://ecin.ca/custom-xgs-pon-sfp-stick-module-xgspon-ont-w-t-mac-function-mounted-on-sfp-package/

The FibreMall unit has been shipped and due to be delivered by Monday.

I’m plugging it into my Mikrotik CRS-317-1G-16s+ running on Switch OS mode then trunked to my PFSense router on its own VLAN.

OK so now I need to reveal that despite publicly not recommending VM, the lure of 2Gbps symmetric was simply too much and I took a service from them, after learning about the WAS-110.

I bought one from FibreMall, that group buy is too long for my tastes anyway, especially for the sake of £20. I plugged mine into a CRS-310 and like you nsmhd, spanned it across my network to my router (in another part of the house) on it's own VLAN. Works perfectly, 2Gbps symmetric ahoy.

Edit: I should add also, so far I've had nothing but a positive experience. External work was done well in advance of the install. Actual install day the engineer was done in 30 minutes, and the speed is as advertised everytime I have tried it. So, I can only report a good experience, at least for me.

My WAS-110 arrived today from Fibre Mall got it setup using the instructions over on 8311 discord and working fine so far 👍

@nsmhd @dee.jay - how is the latency on symmetric 2Gbps VMO2?
I’m based in Shrewsbury on Gig1 Symmetric and get
2.8ms to Gateway and next hop both Perry Barr In Birmingham

5-7ms to Manchester based stuff
6-9ms to London based stuff.

When I first got it Cloudflare routed to Manchester so got lower latency then switched to London so slightly higher.

Quad9 has some weird routing where it looks to be going via Amsterdam and gets 15ms latency.

Overall the latency and jitter is very good and on par with other XGSPON networks I’ve seen.

DNS on the first hop is obviously wrong, you aren't going to Norwich. First hop is Perry Barr BNG 1 / perr-bng-1.
Yeah their dns is all over the place my public IP is Stockton was Johnston in Scotland when on Modem mode and on a different IP 😂
Obviously all wrong guess they have not got round to updating them for new areas.

Interesting, so XGS-PON in Shrewsbury bypasses Telford and the Wolves core.

Unless that nrwh dns is in one of those locations.

Apologies for the random question, but how can you tell what exchange you're going through with the 4 letter word before core? Just interested personally.

Traceroute to 1.1.1.1 (keeping in mind I'm fairly sure the modem would be a Hub 5x possibly (not at home and I'm in a VM FTTP area atm) shows "azte-core-2a..." for me.

You can decode the four letter locations using the VM network map that can be found here https://www.virginmediabusiness.co....usiness-Wholesale-interactive-network-map.pdf

But like we say some of the DNS names are outdated/incorrect
Ah thanks, accidentally typed the wrong name I think.

Looks like I'm being routed through Bristol, I do vaguely remember Virgin Media having offices there (aztw corresponds to a business park where EE and Vodafone also have offices).
