Modem

I have a Huawei HG612 modem which is getting a bit long in the tooth. I would like to have a spare as backup. My question is if this modem packed up would I gain anything by replacing it with a Huawei M992 which is a Gfast model which I am told will be ok on FTTC or stick with another 612.

From the perspective of FTTC (VDSL2) performance, probably not, or at least.. no truly appreciable difference. But then I've not seen many people using the M992 on VDSL2 lines, only G.fast. You could of course just buy a router with an integrated VDSL2 modem too.

Or you can buy a standalone VDSL modem from another manufacturer, e.g. Draytek Vigor 130.

This lets you see line stats without having to hack the firmware. In order to do that, you need to configure a subnet on your router's WAN port, which carries IP traffic to the modem's web interface, *in addition* to the PPPoE traffic to the Internet. I can do that with a Mikrotik router just fine, but whether your existing router can do that, I don't know.

I am going to try the Vigor 130. Not sure I am upto getting the stats but if my router (Asus 88U) can I will give it a try. So thank you for that, also a thank you to Mark who has made my mind up concerning a M992 modem.

With the current Asus firmware, you no longer need to set up a second channel in order to see the stats - provided the Vigor 130 is using its default PPPoE/PPPoA connection type.
Asus router WebUI > Network Map > Internet Status (the top globe like graphic): WAN IP - it'll list both your internet-facing IP and the IP through which you can access the Vigor 130 WebUI.
