More network misery for BE/O2 retail customers tonight

The return of the tsunami strikes again it would seem, what will they cast the blame on this time, fiber break weather, the rest of the internet ?

1 you can bet that they won't be truthful about the cause

2,It will be gone by 12 AM After the peak hours

Again throughput both upstream and downstream is affected will not give normal line speed, as well as other affects on the actual connection it's self that are is some way associated with this congestion, Is it any wonder why customers are leaving in their droves , they may well speculate that it's because of no FTTC offering, But that is only a part of it , it's crap like this that is evident all to frequently coupled with their scripted support

I am on o2 LLU via Aquiss I have to say I have had no speed drops, latency or packet loss all night. Would seem this is only the direct customers on o2.

BE/O2 retail customers As your with Aquiss you are using the wholesale product that does not use the same peering routing or data transits, the only thing the same is the LLU exchange kit used , basically hence why you won't see these crappy issues, unless your exchange becomes congested

Dear customers, regrettably we do have an issue with one of our fibre links. You might experience increased latency in peak hours.
ETR is 03:00

From the BE members forum, note the PEAK HOURS a fiber break would not only affect peak hour traffic and if they knew about this fiber break as implied in their responce then why did they fail to post info about it on their status page ?

Did this get fixed? Link to the report?

I'm on o2 and I didn't have any problems, in fact I've never had any problems with o2.
Guess I'm one of the lucky ones.

Yes it appeared resolved by 23:50 Interestingly enough they knew of this fibre break earlier on during yesterday daytime well before any affects where seen (due to peak time ) traffic, So could of given warning of it in advance , their ETA for it to be fixed was 3.00am

http://status.bememberservices.com/?DoAction=Historic was only put there after several customers complained about it @ 8.00pm

Also looking at the ping monitor and others the high latency decreases a little prior to ceasing fully There have been recent reports of issues with BBC Iplayer buffering but other streams unaffected , Could be sign of another major peering or CDN problem developing

Yes you probably are, O2/BE retail broadband does seem to be a "Post code lottery" Compared to some other ISP's Past and present

Yeah, looking at your link it seems the problems were in London and the Midlands, whereas I'm in the northeast a few miles west of Newcastle.

I'm no where near midlands or London either, but there are customers who are near London who where not affected ,
Trying to make sense of their network topology which will belong mainly to 3rd parties is somewhat near impossible, as it seems to have very little logic to it,

But your fibre breaks will normally cause disruption to almost all isp's not just one , They obviously just don't have sufficient reserve resources available for such problems, and the amount of resources available differers a lot depending where you live, Telefonica has starved o2/be of investment for far too long, unless this changes i don't see a long future for both , and giving BB away free for x amount of months or never increasing subs for existing customers doesn't help , it will probably become wholesale only

My exchange is due to be "upgraded" to BEs magical new network soon, judging by how *cough* "well" that went in and around London im bracing myself for more incompetence.

Oh yes , those who have static ip's and don't use the cough router they supply you may find you get disconnected frequently due to their DHCP if you own router doesn't support it like the netgear DG834 range flashed with dg team fw , and some are complaining about a rise in latency due to the different routing used

Id forgive them for that if that was the only issue but it seems throughout October a load of the London exchanges they "upgraded" had issues. Some actually had problems (Croydon area if i remember right) the actual same day the *cough* "upgrade" took place.

Even using one of their own routers people had problems, first having to do stupid things in telnet to make it work and then a "beta" firmware which it seems still has not solved all problems. Even if that did i seem to remember reading that until recently Apple MAC users couldn't upgrade firmware on BEs Thomson "garbage" boxes. That from an ISP that claims in its own Faqs they support MACs ROFLMAO.

Or the short version is once again they show utter incompetence.

Of course what did you seriously expect, All the support at retail level sucks both on o2 and be unlimited they do not have the level of control and info needed the right hand does very rarely know what the left hand is doing, so co odination is near impossible

The sooner Telefonica kill O2 and BE fixed line phone and broadband off due to the massive customer losses and profit decline they continue to have the better. Hopefully that will be by the end of next year as it now appears O2's future (at least the near) is going to be more mobile focused. No doubt if it does happen we will know... Just have to watch out for BE and their groupies insisting everything is fine and making promises that are never delivered again.
