Most reliable fibre owner-provider?

Hi Everyone

I live in a block of flats in Central London which currently only has fibre from Virgin Media but I don't want touch them with a barge pole because of their terrible reviews on Trustpilot. I have contacted the management of the block to ask them about getting BT fibre into the building but they seem very reluctant to do this which makes me very baffled and frustrated.

I intend to try to persuade then to allow another fiber provider into the building but before I do so, I want to find out which provider is the best.

I want to run VOIP over fibre with as little latency, jitter or dropped packets as possible so reliability is much more important to me than speed.

The following is a list of companies who I know own their own fiber networks in at least London: (The list may not be complete.)

Openreach (BT)
TalkTalk
Virgin Media
G Network
Hyperoptic

I would be very grateful indeed for as many comments as possible to help me decide which of the the above, or perhaps another fibre owner-provider, is the most reliable.

Thank you very much.

Kind regard

Tim

I would agree to avoid virgin media at all costs. I've had no choice but to use them for years and finally quit for good in January and been on 5G ever since. I have friends on hyperoptic and they've got nothing but good things to say about them. Sorry can't comment for the rest.

Hi Dabigm

Thank you very much indeed for your reply.

I have discovered that 5G is not perfect for VOIP.

Hi Dabigm

Thank you very much indeed for your reply.

I have discovered that 5G is not perfect for VOIP.
works ok on three. I have two VoIP providers. But then 3 doesn't do CGNAT. Probably right, but my choice where I live is 5G , DSL (max 60mbit) or Virgin. I'm waiting for netomnia to finish their install.

You should try and add your resilience via backup services and not by trying to pick a single "reliable" provider. Anybody can have their fibres dug up by mistake or sabotaged on purpose.

Of the providers you have listed, TalkTalk don't own a physical fibre network (at least I assume they've finished selling off FibreNation), and only Openreach lets you choose which ISP you would like to use with their service, giving you options to suit your budget and requirements.

Hi jpm

Thank you very much for your reply.

You have mentioned resilience. I actually already have some resilience because I have both 5G and ADSL. However, from tests I have done, I have discovered that only the ADSL gives me VOIP which is free from jitter and packet loss.

The reason I am looking for a reliable provider is because I want a fibre connection which will give me VOIP which is free from jitter and packet loss.

Also, I think that trying to get the management of the block to allow two more fibre networks into the building will be a lot harder that trying to get them to allow just one more fibre network (in addition to the the existing Virgin Media network).

Thank you also very much for correcting me about TalkTalk.

I think that Openreach is probably my best option but I would still be very grateful for further suggestions from people.

Doesn't cityfibre also let you choose which ISP you go with ?

I live in a village, just inside South Wales by the M4.
Fixed line options. Openreach and soon Ogi Broadband (who are building their own fibre network).
Only used Openreach. Used BT and Plusnet ISPs. Openreach network has been reliable. On the few occassions where have had no Internet . Think 3 in total over 10 years, generally been sorted quickly in a couple of days.

I think the OP needs to be going back to the management company for their building, and explain that within the next few years broadly copper phone cables are going to be replaced with fibre. Therefore it's inappropriate for the building management company to bury their head in the sand, and proactively considering the need to support the need of Openreach and Virgin to install Fibre (and later retire their Copper and Coax cables), and maybe one or more other Fibre providers - likely suspects would be hyperoptic, g.network and community fibre in London. The management company should realise how good quality internet connectivity is as important as leccy, gas and water for their leaseholders/tenants, and therefore ensure there is a standard process in place along with wayleave agreements to provide access to risers and containment paths to support fibre. And if there is a need to improve the containment provision before all this happens to avoid the fibre guys making it up when onsite and doing something suboptimal. It's one of those things where the management company being proactive will make it their interaction with the fibre installers so much easier, and ensure that the building that their manage remains attractive for leaseholders and tenants because it's well connected.
