Motorola SB 4200

Hi, I'm just wondering if anyone else uses the Motorola SB 4200 cable modem??

The problem I'm currently having is that, whenever I'm connected longer than 8 days it just randomly stops working.. loses all ability to work, connect to the Internet, IRC, msn, yahoo, ICQ .. various applications.. All LED indicators appear normal and functioning.

My technical support denies all knowledge of such problem, constantly requesting the current status of the lights at the time of disconnection.. idiots.

The modem stays like this until I either do a clean reboot of the computer, or I do a power cycle of the modem..

Anyways, if anyone knows anything or has the same problem.. or ideas even.. let me know.

Thanks,

Mike.

I use a Motorola SB 4200 with Win xp pro. I have to say it works fine, over six months now. However, it has not been ON all that time. I turn off at night. Maybe it's the PC is saying *reboot me*, and not the Motorola moaning.

If the cable modem wasnt transferring data some or all of the lights would go out... It sounds more like your pc needing a reboot or maybe an issue with TCP/IP.

Cable modems are simple pieces of equipment compared to a pc and hardly go wrong, so first place to blame/look is your own PC.

I hear the Surfboard 4200 had a glitch in its firmware, which as I understand is now fixed in a recent revision  and is available at Motorola's site :)

Sometimes It's not the users computer norfett, no use blaming them 90% of the time ;)

Motorola SB4200

This is the cable modem that i was provided when Telewest first did the install.

To tell you the truth, my modem is fine - Its on 24/7 - never turned off - think its been off twice / maybe three times in approx 2 years. ( due to power cut lol )

I have had to reboot it once manually I think, because of a connection problem.

However I have to say, that I have recently been to a mates house, who has just had Telewest 512Kb installed at his house, to use for work. They completed the install, and I went around after they had finished to rig the laptop up wirelessly. They used the new Motorola SB5100 ( updated model, black about half the size of the 4200 ) have to say that it looks smarter than the 4200 - and also reading up about it - its apparently able to cope with speeds up to 30MB download !!!! YIKES !!!!

Then I fell asleep - dreamt that I had my own dedicated 30Mb pipe - woke up and realised it was but a dream !!! lol

i got installed yesterday and i have the surfboard Motorola SB5100 (black one) - apparently there are loads of the big grey ones still being used

still itworks - and works well!
