Hi

My employer is wanting to move from Demon to BT and has asked me if I will sort out the changing. I have spent a long time on the phone to Demon on their 0845 number, no answer. I then noticed on their website an 0800 number to request a MAC code. We have 2 accounts with them, one we had last week asked them to cancel altogether, and the one I am sorting we want to move to BT. Initially, through either my fault or theres they are sending me a MAC code for the canceled altogether account, when I realized I phoned back explaining and asking for the MAC code for the account with the domain name attached. They told me ounce BT use the MAC code they will end our service, also we need to sing a form being sent by them. He also said that we need to provide the tags from BT for the domain name before BT using the mac code or we will loose the domain name, is that right? Won't this mean we will not receive emails as our domain name will be with BT, plus out website will not be available as we will not have been able to upload it to BT until after our account is setup. Or have I just not understood how the whole thing works?, which is highly likely.

Thansk for any help.

/me takes a moment to wrap my head around all that :) .

First things first, webhosting is an added extra with most ISP's so if you have a business it's often better to put the domain and hosting with a dedicated host instead of a broadband provider - avoids the sort of problem you're having now. Essentially your broadband should move over quite quickly, though the hosting may take a few days longer.

Now, once the new BT account is live and assuming the package you've chosen does indeed include domain webhosting, then you should be able to upload your website backup right away and start updating all the usual settings – albeit only displaying via a temporary URL.

From there you need to contact BT and give them the domain tags, they will then swap the nameservers from Demon to BT, which usually takes 24 hours to propagate properly. If Demon registered the domain in their name (not a good idea to let ISPs do that) then you will probably have to sign a transfer letter, which could result in a longer downtime for your domain while the admin is done (you can usually do this by FAX to speed up the process).

On the other hand if your domain is controlled via Nominet then you might be able to do this yourself as you would have legal control. You would know if this is the case because you should have received a certificate from them and login details to access your domain details when it was first registered. So the problem is the admin wait-time.

I do sympathise, having had to move a lot of domains and sites myself.
