Moving home and ISP - Advice would be great

Good afternoon ISPReview Forums!

I am moving home soon and am looking for some advice to which ISP would be best for me, but first - a little background.

I have lived in rented accomodation for 5 years, and I have never had good internet no matter how hard I tried, I've even had to set up multiple lines in a single household to switch between connections when one got un-stable... This was mostly due to where I have been living. An absolute killer for an avid gamer. Now I am moving to Warrington (WA2 area) and have the option of Fibre Broadband.

I am a gamer, and my misses streams, alot. So my requirements are basically the whole shabang: High Download/Upload speeds, lardge bandwidth, low latency, jitter and hopefully no packet loss.

Which provider is good for this? I know it depends on location but I will be living in the WA2 area of Warrington.
I have ruled out TalkTalk, who, by my experience alone, have absolutely terrible customer service if you have an issue of ANY kind.
I have also ruled out Virgin, who have had some horror stories due to their terrible routing decisions and gamging horror stories.

Luckly I'm in a position where the cost of the ISP is not an issue unless it is ridiculously expensive.

So, I'm left with a few and am leaning towards Sky, as I am also interested in the TV package (Not interested in landline - who uses them anymore?!). But I have recently read that they censor some things and I am not sure what this includes, as I have read that you can choose to disable this option at any point?

Basically just looking for some advice, as this is my first chance in a long time to get fast, stable, relaible, low latency internet - and definitly do not want to botch the oppertunity with a single bas decision made by myself. Needless to say it would help mine and my misses relationship too

I work as an electrical and control engineer so feel free to use all the jargin you wish, hopefully I should understand it :) TalkTalk definitly did not.

I'm guessing, being a gamer, that unlimited usage is also a requirement and I'm also going to assume that by "fibre" you mean FTTC from the big ISPs (except Virgin Media). In that case most of them will do a good job as FTTC tends to be pretty good for latency, although Sky Broadband is a nice pick.

But I'd also point you towards Zen Internet's new unlimited "fibre" packages, as well as Aquiss. Both providers can do unlimited and offer good techy style support.

Have a look at A&AISP for stability, customer service and overall satisfaction.
Thanks Sledgehammer - I have looked in to A&AISP but as mentioned below, unlimited download is a must really, being a gamer and the misses streams constantly. I could not find an unlimited package last I looked into it, and it was particularly pricey.

Yes, FTTC is what I'm after. I'm not too bothered by the slight increases FTTH offer, seeing as most of the servers I play on are elsewhere in the EU. I'm just hoping for a single, high quality line.

I am definitly interested in both Zen and Aquiss, although I am pulled more towards Aquiss looking at recent reviews.

Are there any concerns to be had regarding the 'censorship' Sky provide? It seems to be the only outstanding issue I can think of. I understand that I would get much better customer service with Aquiss for example (but the hope is I will never have to get in touch with customer support, with any provider!), but I have other pulls towards Sky such as the potential of the TV package. Also it seems to be the best big ISP to go for when taking into account latency and jitter.

Appreciate your replys guys :smilet:

I forgot to mention, it is the location aspect I am unsure of the most - I have no experience at looking into exchanges, existing routing plans, etc. or anything to look out for within that area.

For example I have heard that Virgin and BT can have some odd routing lines throughout echanges etc.

Filed if you post or PM me a few IPs of servers I can do a tracert to them I am on Aquiss FTTC from Manchester.

I know my latency would be lower if I move back to BT's VDSL modem but I prefer to use my draytek VDSL/router which the next firmware update will resolve the g-imp issues causing the latency to increase.

The problem with restrictions is, the definition of what will get blocked keeps getting wider. The law used to block torrent sites was brought in to ONLY block kiddie porn.

DO we really want to end up like China, with millions of people employed to censor every website you visit in real time??
