Hi

I am moving out for the first time and want some advice.

I work online meaning I need net access, no access = no wages.

The new place has a bt connection point but I dont THINK its connected, I think it got DC when the last tenants left.

How should I proceed with getting the net asap?

Is my only option to connect the BT line and then wait 2 weeks or so for a adsl package to go through?

I am only there for 6 months and I am told BT is mininum 12 months.

Would like some advice on the best way to proceed with this, what would you do?

Thnx

You dont have to use BT for internet once the line has been connected and signed off it will take approx a week to have adsl enabled. You need an ISP with monthly contracts so you can cancel when you need to.

Not sure on contracts for landline you need to ask them but to have internet when you move in you really need it all sorted before you move in so live line and house move almost same time.

I am hoping the line will be live time I move in, if not how long does it take for a line to become live so I can least have 56k?

I will definetly choose an isp that is month to month or 3 months.

I did come across www.sosbroadband.com

Know anything of it? Thinking of using them for adsl while I wait for whatever ISP I choose to connect me, would be better than having 56k.

Thanks for your help

When I moved house I arranged for the line to be activated on the day I moved in. I don't know if BT need an lead time, but if I were you I would arrange it before you move.

As for ISP, if you are happy with a 3 month notice period, I would recommend Be (www.bethere.co.uk). Theie Be Unlimited package requires 3 months with no fee (or for £40 you can cancel within 2 weeks).

This does not apply to their Be Value product, which is a 12 month contract.

Never heard of SOS broadband, but at £2/day, its bloody expensive, especially when you can easily get 1 to 3 month contracts with good ISPs.

I meant only use SOS Broadband while I wait for whatever ISP I choose to go with to activate my line, which can take 1-2 weeks and I cant be on 56k for that long.

1-2 weeks is the guide, it took 2 days the first time I had a line enabled and 4 days the second time.
Of course there are people how have ended up waiting over a month!!!

Thanks

My other worry is the 12 month BT contract, I will probably only be at this place for 6 months.

If you are moving to another location you can move the BT acount over with you I am sure that happens, best to contact them and explain this is a 6 month placement and after 6 months you have to move out. otherwise it is try to get wireless BB while you are living there and skip the BT landline. Vodaphone,Tmobile are two doing BB by wireless.

Just got back from viewing the property, I move out next week, they said they can give me an exact date tomorrow and then I just ring up BT and get the line connected for the day before I move in.

I was just looking at the Sky broandband offers as was hoping to get Sky tv and get it all in one but seems its just a 12 month contract? I really need Sky so anyone know how much it would cost to cancel if I did move out after 6 months? (I MIGHT be there for longer, but right now its 6 months)

If there is nothing in their T&C's assume the balance of your remaining contract.

If you need a broadband connection where you're not locked into a contract, try http://www.titan-adsl.co.uk - they had a minimum period of 30 days when I joined them. You will still need to check that still applies, but they have excellent service. You will need your own broadband modem though, and a connection charge does apply if you're not migrating from another provider.
