Moving programs from C to D drive

My main hard drive is partitioned to C and D drives. I install all new programs to the larger D drive, however there are still some programs on the C drive and it is becoming critically low on space. Around 200MB.

Is it possible to just move the program files of each program from C to D and change any shortcuts also from C to D, or would I need to uninstall the programs and re-install on D?

Thanks for any responses!

should you move the programs from drive C to D you will could mess up any registry entries for them. I would suggest that to avoid this, that you uninstall the programs and then reinstall them on to drive D. This would be by far the safest way to do it

try it! what have you got to lose?the most common prob is shortcuts no longer work:-easily fixed!if you encounter any worse probs you can always move them back!Boot your pc into safe mode whilst moving either way that way you are less likely to get an error message saying this file or that file cannot be moved as it is in use by some prog or other

No don't, registery has a lot of links that can't easily be fixed without a lot of editing.

So 5 mins uninstalling and reinstalling on D: against an hour or more of text searches in regedit for all references in the registery for each and every link, that is for each program.

Depends on the type of program you intend to move some have lots of reg entries some have hardly any also some programs on uninstall can lose(or lose access to)work associated with the original install, can be a pain ifyou have been using it for a while like I said if program doesn't run correctly after moving move it back then uninstall/reinstall

Thanks Guys - I think I'll go for the safe option of uninstalling then reinstalling on D to avoid any problems.

I find it hard to believe that people with limited knowledge have the guts to give advice on technical matters.

patitionmagic7 has an option to allow files to be moved from one harddrive to another

which os are you using?one way of freeing space on c without moving/uninstalling+reinstalling could be to move the swap file/paging file from c to d:-leave about 128mb on c to avoid error messages with some programs but move anything over this size to other drive

what reg entries do you think would be affected by moving part of the paging file?
It was a suggestion to free up space without moving any apps at all(depending on swap file size might be worth doing) and without spending money on partition magic:- free and easy to do,but as windows sets size of file relative to installed memory every system is different,if he has a lot of memory installed file will be large and some can be moved if little memory installed file will also be small and not worth bothering with

If you havent already done so then move the swap file and the temporary internet cache to the bigger drive, when you do so you can set a fixed swap size to reduce harddrive fragmentation as well.
This will free up some space, also try moving the "My Documents", "My Music" etc folders to the bigger drive if you have lots of data stored, as this doesnt need registry files meddled with.

Read/write performance is highest on the outer tracks of a hard disk, so moving the swap/paging file to an inner partition will somewhat degrade virtual memory performance, so I would only do that as a temporary fix.

There was a free program for windows 98 called COA2 but PC Magazine now charge for access to their downloads, I suspect it will be just as quick and far less trouble to uninstall/reinstall. Some programs will fix some of their own broken registry entries and MAY work if you copy them to another path, but you are likely to have problems, broken uninstall routines and crap left in the registry at the very least.

I agree with the Capt. about moving data such as MY documents and temporary internet files etc. If your an Outlook Express user there's an option to shift the store folder too. I prefer to keep my important data out of the C partition anyway for easier restores.
