Moving to the UK, need some clarifications...

Hi all,

I will be moving to London next week. I've started to do some research on ISPs and found the whole thing much more complicated that in Canada.

I wasn't originally planning on having a landline in my flat, but it appears that I must have a landline to get internet. Is is possible to get a cheap landline only for broadband? In other words, I still don't want to make calls on this line, just use it for internet. If not, what kinda line should I get that will cost the least?

Another problem is that I'm quite a heavy internet user. I probably need at least 20GB/month. Is it just me or do people use internet a lot less in Europe? Most ISPs seem to have a cap around 10GB (according to this site). What ISP do you guys recommend for a heavy user?

I'm also looking to getting TV service as well, and I think bundling with internet will definitely save money, but I've only found BT who bundles TV and internet, are there any other ISPs who also provide TV serivce?

Thanks!!

Hi Kevin,

No most ISPs don't have a cap of 10GB, remember our ISP list uses a price target benchmark of £20 per month and since most smaller providers are BT based then you're just picking up on a common trend. You'll find ISPs have lots of additional packages too, we just list one package per ISP as ISPreview is a free site and does not have the resources to maintain a massive database of everything.

If you don't want a land-line then you could consider a Mobile Broadband service, though most only offer up to a 15GB per month allowance and that would set you back around £20 per month on an 18 month contract or similar. Coverage, performance and service stability are also highly questionable with Mobile Broadband services.

If you're planning to stay awhile then you may prefer to seek out a line rental and broadband bundle from somebody like TalkTalk, which will give you 40GB per month and a voice line for around £18. Service quality is variable though. Virgin Media also do some good cable bundles and Sky Broadband has a pretty good bundle too but you'd need to take their TV service as well.

Check your telephone exchange on this site to see what types of broadband are available.

Typically broadband will come from a company working in conjunction with BT, or cable. I don't think you can rent a line for broadband only (unless someone knows different).

20GB/month isn't very much, you shouldn't have much trouble finding a provider (FWIW I'm with http://adsl24.co.uk/ an Enta reseller). Lots of people seem to like Be ...

Sky offer TV (satellite)/broadband bundles and no doubt cable companies do as well e.g. Virgin.

HTH :hrmph:

Checkout virginmedia.com there the UKs main cable operator. The have broadband and tv services available for fairly competitive prices.

They offer broadband and TV without a landline but it will cost you more, so it might work out cheaper to have the phone line. It's not advertised without the phone online so you will have to call them. Their broadband comes in 3 speed tiers; 10/20 and 50mbs and are advertised as unlimited but they are of course subject to a fair use policy. If your not in a cable area they look at SKY. They use ADSL so you will have a line rental fee to pay.

I'm not sure how adsl works in Canada but if you can get cable go for that.

Thanks for all the help.

I looked at the BT website and it seems that the cheapest phone plan costs only a line rental fee of £11.25. Is this what I need for broadband? Seems a little pricey.

thanks!

Yes a monthly line rental fee of around £11 to £12 is usually required for a fixed land line broadband service. But you may find it cheaper to go with a bundle from Virgin Media, Sky.com (needs TV service subscription too) or TalkTalk than BT directly.

and that £11 or £12 is NOT including VAT
