With Windows 7 set for release in Dec. 09, Microsoft is getting ready with their free upgrade program, which allows Vista users to switch to Windows 7 when it arrives. The folks at TechARP have consistently scored accurate scoops on Microsoft software releases. They have now revealed Microsoft's upgrade plans, schedules and even screenshots of the upgrade process.

Seems like Vista will go down as Windows ME - MkII :hrmph:

Well if Win7 is a significant improvemnet (which is looking likely) I will upgrade my Fista laptop like a shot if it is free or there is only a nominal fee.

Free for all vista users or people who buy now? I have retail ultimate shall I get any thing for free :(

It seems to be part of the upgrade program - starting some time this year -

I just read it - I bet the eligibility window is only the few months before 7 is released.

Edit: Bob got there first. Damn! ;)

The document is still only a draft, but it sounds like it's limited to the eligibility period for the free option. But I suppose there'll be a paid Vista Ultimate to Windows 7 Ultimate option.

Probably, and with Ultimate edition you'll get 3 NEW wallpapers! And a promise of some unspecified cool stuff coming in the next decade or so.

"other stuff" being the wallpaper, presumably ;) And maybe minesweeper deluxe (or will that be in the Windows 7 Ultimate Plus Pack, available at all good computer stores for $300.....?)

Since you obviously purchased your copy of Ultimate Fisting before the eligibility window, I doubt it (same here, although I have Fista Business, which was pre-installed on a new PC).

This is M$ after all.

I got a whole bunch of Vista Home Premium OEM's, two for 32Bit and two for 64Bit setups but this was back during the Jan 2007 launch so I guess no free upgrades for me :( . Still using Win7 beta on my backup system, generally works well but seems to crash when trying to open text files from a USB flash drive or when trying to load a drawing into Autocad 2008.

Likewise it's networking refuses to connect properly to my other Vista systems, which I think is because of the new Homegroup rubbish. That's beta code for you though.

I don’t think I will buy windows 7. Ms should give all the vista users a free upgrade but I don’t think they will do that guess I have to buy it with new pc if an when I buy it

Don't Microsoft normally do this to stop a drop in sales of the current OS just before the new one is launched?

they did do this last time when Vista came out .. but i agree, stops sales of the current OS from dropping

One big problem I forsee with Win7 is that Microsoft has adopted their standard upgrade practice, which means that you'll be able to upgrade from Vista to 7 but not the one before Vista (i.e. XP). I suspect that a lot of enterprises whom have been waiting for Win7 instead of Vista will be somewhat frustrated by that, I know my firm wasn't happy to hear it :) .

How far could they drop? It's not like Vista is exactly popular!

Just to add a little bit more information in case I confused anybody. You will still be able to 'upgrade' from XP to Win7 in terms of license/purchased product, but I understand that most or all version progressions from XP will need a "clean" install of Win7 as opposed to using the "upgrade" process. Hence, no true upgrade.

MS aren't all bad. Where I work we're a charity so they sell us desktop OS licenses for £7, server licenses for £25, CALs for £2, Office Pro for £14.
