my ma's WinME????

Hi All,

I am a newbie to this and was wondering if anyone might know why my mums Gateway PC with intel celeron and WinME keeps bumping her off the Internet? Today whilst attempting to check for updates from microsoft it disconneted and infact appeard to shut down followed by a reboot and Disk Check 3 times. This miserable effort left me close to hammer time and it happens all the time, V. frustrating. Any suggestions that do not involve buying a new PC will be most gratefully welcome.

Cheers
Birdie

try format the hard drive before buying a new pc.

if you have 98 might be better option than me or if the pc can run xp will be more stable.

me is very buggy

thanks all.....

Thankyou to all how have replied;-)

The pooter does have anti virus software from Norton and indeed adaware and spybot alongside kerio personel firewall. The ME pooter is on dial up from tiscali. The thing is when it disconnects it actuallly shuts down altogether and the screen goes blank and then sometimes it reboots itself other times not.....over time this appears to be happening more frequently. I am considering the 98 option as I am aware of the many flaws in ME and probably Bill should give me the 98 for free cause Microsoft sold it to my ma and she really knows less than me and thats not much....lol. The anti virus option is that available via Norton or is this specific to AVG? I have WinXP and kaspersky so I know little about ME and Norton...Again thanks for your help Butler, Hardcore Hustler. Chris.....lucky you....aw if only...is the link a help to service ME????
Be good
Andy

Sounds like you have the MS Blast virus, there are many versions of it, it forces your pc to shut down whilst connected to the pc (mostly) but can also shut it down when not connected to the internet.

Here's a link for more info on how to remove it...

LINK HERE

If that tool doens't work I would suggest doing an online virus check which I think you can use Norton for.

If that fails try just searching google for "MS Blast remove" and you will find many fixes.

Hope it solves it for you... I'm 95% sure thats what it will be.

This is not the Blaster worm. Blaster only effects the Win NT5.x/NT4 kernel, (that is: Windows NT4, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows 2003).

You describe your problem as disconnecting from the net and rebooting? It sounds like a reboot occurs and this causes the disconnection. Does it ever reboot when you are not connected to the internet? If not then it could be a problem with the dial up networking program rnaapp.exe, or if your ISP uses a dialler could be related to this. The other other possiblilty is a DoS attack, if you communicate using IRC this could be a possibility, though unlikely.

I'd advise you to just nuke your current installation and reinstall, as you could spend days trying to solve this one. Probably not what you want to hear. WinME is buggy, and I know alot of people say "I have no problem", but that is dependent on the hardware platform and the user requirements. If you have Win98, preferably SE, go with that. If you decide on an XP/2K upgrade, download all updates first before going online, or you really will have msblast, welchia-B and alot more.

Aye your right m8, forgot he was using ME, my fault... however it is the symptoms of the Blast virus though lol

Good luck!

PS, Have you tried the system restore? Date it back before the problem started.

Good advice, I forgot ME had the system restore as well. This, usually, pretty useless feature may be the answer here, and an easier alternative to formatting and installing clean. ;)

beta&cronik....

cheers again for prompt replies guys. Will try the norton on line scan although I fear that already running Norton 2004 I feel this an unlikely resolve but you never know. Failing that I will re-instal and pray that this corrects the problem. The pooter has much downloaded security software mostly and I wondered if this might cause conflict...i.e. running adaware and spybot on ME????? Gosh, questions, questions anyway dudes thanks for your support

Try what you think m8, alot of the MS updates do cause conflicts with current software and hardware you may have installed. Each update give's you information and advice if you really should download it.

Like I said m8 if all else fails simply try the system restore which you have installed through ME.

START>>>ALL PROGRAMS>>>ACCESSORYS>>>SYSTEM TOOLS

You'll find it there :)

Norton is fairly bad at times 3 times i have got hit thats with allways checking for updates and such still norton lets stuff in.

Trend can and does see the bugs norton must do better value for money poor.

I use AVG which is free, but Mcafee is a better proprietary Antivrius than Norton, but like Norton, it takes your whole damned machine over. Personally I avoide Symantec/Norton software like the plague, it's badly designed difficult to uninstall/update properly and buggy, it also relies heavily on alot of annoying background processes. I won't get into any real Norton bashing though as when I do that their fan club or a load of people that bought it the previous day arrive. :p ;)

Sasser performs a denial of service on WinNT4/5.x systems, (the usual 30 second count down thing or whatever it is) much like Ms Blaster. Win9x/ME is unaffected by sasser. I doubt this is cause by any kind of malware.

The reason it shuts down is the virus sends a message to the RPC (Remote Procedure Call) to switch the PC falsely off. This command is for network admins where over a LAN they can remotely switch any PC off from there own desk. This usually gives I think 60 seconds to save all your work however you can disable the RPC from working or extend the timeout.

Like Beta said it dont effect machines with ME so it aint that.
