ndo vs vispa

ping is a command you can used in the MS-DOS box (or command line) which measures the response times from a particular server, measured in milli-seconds (MS).

Obviously, the fewer MS it takes to recieve a reply, the quicker the response. It's particularly important for online gamers as a slow response (ping) can affect how well the game plays - if the response is too slow it can be impossible to play as the games go very jerky..

For an example, click on start - run, and type in cmd into the box.

Then type in 'ping ispreview.co.uk' and hit enter - you will get 4 ping readings.

If you aren't an online gamer, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Just wanted to say thanks for the help everyone..i went for NDO today. So now i just gotta sit tight and see if it all goes smoothly. Fingers crossed.

i would have recommened ndo aswell !

i the £25 a month and got my own router

did u get ndo's router or another 1 ?

if ur router came with built in firewall - then don't go buying a software 1 - no need to get a new virus checker - just keep updating it - no need for a pop-up blocker as windows SP2 has 1 built in to windows !

if ur still want a new virus checker - then goto www.download.com and do a search for AVG 6.0 - it free

also check out www.ndousers.co.uk - if u ever have a problem - might safe u phonin them up - i still never had to contact them !

Hey,I went for the modem/router thingy (technical terminology!!) NDO supply (Binatone adsl2000). I kinda figured it would be easiest (not being poota technically minded) for back up and support. I dont actually need to connect multiple pootas,i needed one with a usb and an ethernet (for xbox),so it'll do for me. I have no idea about the firewall stuff,i'll just wing it..and if it doesn't have one it's not as if the software versions exactly break the bank.
Hmm,yeah..i had a look on the MS Update page and saw about the new explorer with pop up stopper. Though it said bout not being able to get it yet or something (is that right or'd i just read it wrong?).
As for NDO,i have emailed them to ask various questions, i always got a very prompt response..which was nice  . I had a snout around thier forum too..it all seems good and helpfull too. I'm also hoping never to need it.
So it's just wait and see if the BT side of things go ok,though we only live about 2 miles (following the line) from the exchange thats apparently a good thing. Though due to a problem a few years back..a long story short we now have a split line, shared with next door,we're the last 2 houses donw a country lane,But if thats a problem its really upto BT to put thier handy work right. I have checked on the BT site and it says (as did NDO's) that we're good for a 2meg connection..i'm only after 512 so fingers crossed all will be well. As i've said before, after a connection speed averaging 28.8..anything's goona seem like it's powered by NASA  !!!

Thanks for the advice on soft/hardware. :)

Good luck - but don't just wing it on the firewall issue - there was a report recently which claimed that on average an unprotected PC will be infected within 20 minutes of connecting to the internet. That doesn't necessarily mean that you will get a virus, but spammers use unprotected machines to send out their crap so you could end up sending thousands of unwanted messages. Any firewall is better than nothing.

I just checked - the Binatone ADSL2000 is a modem only, so it doesn't have a Firewall - get a software one and install it as soon as possible. Also, keep your Anti-virus and operating system up-to-date. If you have broadband, there is no excuse not to since it is quick and has no costs associated with it.

I don't think it comes with a network port either - but if your PC has one I would think you would be able to connect your xbox through that.

Hello

Just to correct this slighty; the ADSL2000 does not have a firewall-per-se but as all the computers you connect behind it are given 192.168.x.x IP addresses which are from a private IP rage, you are not actually vunerable to port scans and the like as these all hit the ADSL2000 instead. The only way you would open yourself up is if you did a one-2-one port forwarding rule in the NAT configuration.

Also - the ADSL2000 has two ports on the back of it - allowing you to connect one computer via USB and another via Ethernet. You could technically connect the Ethernet port to a Hub and then connect any number of computers to the Hub up to the ADSL2000. Both ports can be used at the same time, so the PC in the USb and the XBox Live! via the Ethernet will work just fine.

Make sure however your Anti-Virus software is uptodate - this is good practice even if you connect via an early 1990's 14.4bps modem right upto the latest Broadband. NDO recommends Norton Anti-Virus - www.symantec.com, however there are plenty of providers out there.

Best wishes
Doug

no m8 - to get it the other day u needed auto update to be turned on !

i'm sure it will be avalible for direct download from the windows update site today or tommorow !

i got it already - not a problem here - a few changes in the control panel

Crikey.. Thanks Andy. Cheers for checkin it oot,i do currently run a Zone Alarm firewall. I have Norton 2002 all auto updated, but thanks..i've always been a little paranoid bout gettin virus'. I am gonna get a better firewall, for the same reason..and mustn't mention where the existing one came from but its not that hot  .
Doug from NDO,thanks for your part..i know the modem should do what i need it to as i emailed and asked you before i ordered. The part about all the IP addresses would missed the top of my head i, even if i was wearing a top hat!! How i understand it it..basically i'm connected behind a screen (or a firewall..ah it's making sense now). I'll still get a sortware firewall..better safe than sorry in my book. Does the xbox have any virus issues? I means it's still a compoota at heart right?! Thouh i guess this IP address thing you mention would prevent that anyways. I have no idea what a one 2one NAT port thing is, Would that affect peer2peer sharing? Not that i even bother with that much.
New IP,i have my Windows Auto Update turned on,maybe i just dint catch it right. But if you have it..there's no reason i shouldn't get it. I'll look into it again in a whiles.
Thanks Y'all.

Zone alarm is the software firewall I run - I also have a hardware one, but only becuase I got the router after I put Zone Alarm on my machine. Just make sure you update Zone Alarm from time to time.

AFAIK, Xbox (ar any other console) has no viruses at present.

Cheers, i may as well just stick with Zone Alarm then. :)

Yeah ive never had any problems with NDO been with them for about 8 months now only had 1 lost connection for a few hours at 1am caused by BT doing work at the exchange, phoned NDO at 1.30am and the tech knew exactly what he was talking about and explained in detail what to change in my router settings to see if was a problem with NDO itself or a problem with BT and as my connection wouldnt even get as far as the exchange it was definitely BT doing maintenance all in all NDO is probably the best ISP going, im running a 4 port adsl router that i bought seperately with 3 machines on it never any problems whatsoever, apart from that 1 time caused by BT my connection never dropped out in 8 months! you try that with AOHell lol!, the webspace has been fine and also the email, no problems here

i personally dont bother with a software firewall as if your running a router its not really necessary, i tested this theory by running norton firewall 2002 and received absoloutely no port scans or attacks using the router, using a usb adsl modem i was getting hits every 15 minutes or so, plugged the router back in and norton detected nothing

id recommend using a decent antivirus nod32 if your paying for it or avg antivirus which is free, im currently running mcafee 2004 and its pretty good, steer clear of pc-cillin that comes with a free trial with alot of computer systems and mainboards, it really is a piece of sh*t!

Yey!!

Hey,just an update to my old thread.
Broad band has arrived!! It's a whole new world..lovely. Thanks NDO!!!
It envokes a smile, not having to wait minutes for pages to open etc.
Have started using Mozilla Thunderbird for my emails, just had enough of Incredimail..there's only so many crashes a guy can stand!!
Just need to sort out a USB2 card (seperate thread, already answered.) and i think i'm sorted..for the time being!!

Thanks to all the guys who gave advice regarding ADSL. :)
