Need help diagnosing B818-263 losing signal on EE

Zyxel NR5103E arrived today, got it up and running pretty quickly (had to insert the SIM card a few times) and looks ok so far. No 5G signal which is a shame, download speeds very similar to the B818, ranging from 30Mb to 120Mb in the past 2 hours.

Having trouble getting the LTE-H monitor connected though, keep getting this error message:

The password is definitely correct as I've logged on to the router via. the web based app. Any suggestions? Thanks

I thought the Zyxel UI showed the connected cell ID somewhere? But as for logging that, I dont believe anyone has built anything that interacts with an Zyxel API, if there even is one that is available off the devices - at least not that I'm aware of

Ok thanks, just had my first internet drop-off, it buffered on Netflix and couldn't run a speedtest on my phone.... bit depressing, perhaps the problem wasn't the router after all!

I meant the browser web UI, not their app - at least from what I've seen on screenshots it's there. I don't have first hand experience, as I don't have one, but someone like @The Wee Bear might be able to comment further

Yes you need to use the Web UI madbroon, it's not available via the app.

After logging in to the Web UI on 192.168.1.1, just click on the little arrow bottom right on the cellular info panel.

In there you should find all the Cellular info, Including the Cell ID.

Hope that helps. :)

Great, found this now, thanks. Where can I search to see the cell on a map? The numbers don't seem to match up with cellmapper.net that I was using previously. The current cell ID is:

Try popping your cell ID in the above calculator madbroon, that should give you your eNB which is your mast identifier.

In Cellmapper go to search and input your eNB number in the tower search which should show you your mast on the map.

Hope I have that right.

My cellmapper isn't working for me at the moment so can't try it for you.

Great thanks, looks like its currently connected to the same tower as my previous B818

Internet dropped out 3 times in the last half an hour, thinking I might be better off sending this router back and spending the money on an antenna for my B818-263 instead! Anything else I can try?

What are the symptoms of the connection drop? Is it a pause before reconnection or does it never reconnect?

Typically you can get a few seconds of 100% packet loss and might not notice when streaming data.

What is the distance to the connected tower and are there any alternatives? What does the online Solwise elevation tool say about line of sight?

It does re-connect, I was watching Netflix and it buffers for about 30seconds, during this time I tried to do a speedtest on my phone and it wouldn't connect for a minute or two. Very frustrating as I get speeds of 100Mb most of the time, but others times it might be 30Mb, I guess when it connects to another mast? Top speed doesn't really matter, it's just the dropping out! Thanks

When I spoke to EE last week they do a service where they fit an antenna for £100, I'm tempted! I could fit it myself but think they would do a better got at setting it up properly...

As an update, I turned off Band 20 but it's still switching cell towers and losing the internet. Last night it was switching from 15682 which is the normal one, across to 15900 (top middle of the chart above). Decided to give up on the router so have bought a Zyxel 5103E from CX for £150 instead (2 year warranty - better than i got with my B818-263 when new!). I thought if I'm buying a new router, might as well go for 5G and see if I get a signal!

I've read good things about that router on this forum so fingers crossed....
The tower far away has 3,7,20. The one near you has 1,3,7. Turning off 20 still leaves 3 and 7 in common. if you left only 1 on, then it wouldn't connect to the far away router. But that doesn't seem ideal!!

On either router, if it's possible to set 1 as the primary band then that may well fix the issue as that's the band the duffer mast lacks.

You could try moving your router to another location to tip things in the nearest mast's favour. I wonder whether your reception is not very good even on the closest one.

Locking to the proper cell on your router (if you can) or a directional antenna should resolve things though. If your reception isn't good generally, then I would go with the directional antenna. It would both ignore the mast it's pointing away from and improve the signal from the mast you do want.

Thanks for the advice, I've turned off all bands apart from number 1, done two speed tests and achieved 79Mb and 45Mb.

Tower stats are this - how does that look?

Handy tool, thanks for pointing this out. The main mast it connects to looks like this:

Looks like a pretty clear run to the antenna. Is the elevation distance of 14m a good or bad thing? My antenna would be about 4m off the ground if I was to install one. Thanks
