I have copied this quote from another forum to widen the audience looking for help.

This should be possible. Creating an Add-on similar to AdBlockPlus, which includes a script to extract the first part of an ad address ie:

http://www.a.adscum.co.uk/adserver/adprovider/admorecrap/annoyingad.gif can extrapulate http://www.a.adscum.co.uk and add to the Host File.

Anyone care to have a shot at creating?

works in theory, but add too much to the hosts file and you can cause system stability issues... l agree it would be interesting but ld do it by maybe emulating the hosts file only when the browser is active.

I agree, the hosts file is really best left alone, it can cause some unusual problems under XP. Not sure about Vista.

Try Opera. Their list of blocked ad sites is completely separate from your hosts file and new ones can be added at any time via a right-click.

This wouldn't be for phormverts would it?

I haven't finished it yet, but I recently added an option to my anti-phorm extension to block requests for a host or optionally a host/path combination, however with mine you have to manualy enter the host in a list and they are currently stored in Firefox's preferences - the only advantage over the host file is mine supports wildcards, or you can use a regular expression.

I suspect phormverts will use a limited range of hosts, or involve a webwise.net or oix redirect, which would make them trivial to block.

Is it better to block the request for a phorm advert, or send them the request with a random (or even someone else's) UID and not display the advert, increasing the apparent number of views in their stats, thereby reducing the click-on percentage?

Hay, just thought? Doesn't the subscribed version of OpenDNS.org allow you to do something similar?

indeed me and my friend tried blocking over 2000 different ad servers it was amazing l never saw an advert on IE for months, however way back then it took my system about 10mins for my system to boot then loading IE, now while things have progressed in the last 5 years and computers could load that faster there is now more spam than ever out there which means more added and that will sit in you ram waiting to be checked all the time.. granted its an interesting prospect but having SVCHOST eat up all your processing power loading a bucket load of urls and redirect them to localhost or wherever takes allot of processing time when it loads.
