The AMD 64 processors with dual channel are -

a) Socket 939 series.
b) FX series.
c) Opteron series.

Oh, that's pretty strange he gave me the exact detials of what too get- was really expensive but maybe that's so I could upgrade easily...RAM is so expensive and very confusing to someone that knows very little

Maybe there is a good reason to run matched pairs with a single channel controller (though I don't know what it is) - you will have to ask your friend.

Dabs has just rung and said that they haven't the case I wanted in, I got a VM2000A Lanfire silver now, will that be ok to fit all the bits I need into the case? Also I ordered a Mcafee Virus scanner and Firewall, I know you can get Firewalls like Zone labs for free, but are they as good?

thanks, it says it'll be a week before my new PC comes- Yey :D

Nick

Ps, the heatsink said its for the AMD Opteron, but just to double chack this will work ok will my 64 3400- sorry to double check, it's all ordered now and just seeing as it's my last chance :)

A little Googling suggests that a Venus 12 (if that is what you ordered) should be compatible with socket 754 CPUs, but do your own research to confirm this - I run Opterons.

Google is your friend ... :hrmph:

I'll pop some of the components into google and try and make out what it means. I will have my fingers crossed on the subject!

Thank you! ;)

I've noticed that some products say OEM and IDE after them, what do these stand for?

thank you :)

The case arrived today- wish I had ordered silver cd rewriter driver though- then it would have matched. But on the one silver one I could find it said OEM at the end so was put off, plus it was cheaper making me think something was missing...

OEM means its not the retail version. Often this means that there is no fancy software, or nice box. OEM is usually fine for what you want. An OEM drive would be absoloutly fine. May not have screws with it, but your bound to have enough come with your case.

When it says IDE this is just the connection it uses. All optical drives are IDE connected, with the exception of a few new SATA ones and external drives.

If your that bothered about it matching, if you have a fancy case, which I think yours is, you can probably get a bezel for it. A small bit of plastic/metal that will go over the front of the drive, allowing it to still open while matching your case.

OEM - Original Equipment Manufacturer - barebones product; not retail boxed
IDE - Integrated Drive Electronics

Nothing wrong with OEM, but you will have to provide things like screws and cables to install something like a CD-rewriter. :)

EDIT: Bah, humbug, you beat me to it Old Dude ... :(

It looks pretty good the case, I'm really looking forward to fitting it all together- the manual looks quite easy and not too techie speak :)

Thanks for your help, I think I'll go for a retail version just to be sure. I want to keep my old PC intact if I can just as a backup if anything went wrong and don't want to have to remove cables etc. Plus some retail packages appear to come with Nero which is quite a good piece of software.

One thing that I haven't been able to find out, is about the PSU, the case I now have didn't come with one so I ordered an Enermax 430W one. However on the box the case came in, it had the option if you had bought a PSU with it to be ticked. It had 360W, 420W and 480W but not the option to have a 430W ticked. I hope that it'll be compatable with the case

That's good. Thank you, you are all really helpful here- should set up an IT support desk and make mega bucks- I'd offer to be your managers of course :D

thanks again it really is appreciated :)

Hell no, you wouldnt beleive the questions you get on those.

It wasnt a helpline, but I had an instance where people whom I built a pc for had 'problems trying to install office'.

Apperently, there was nothing there when they had installed it, and it took an hour.

An hour...? You get that horrible feeling you get when you know what they have done but think its too daft for them to actually have done it.

Me: Errm, could you tell me what the disk says that your installing from?

Anon: Yup, hang on....It says Windows XP Home edition. Is it the right one?

Me: Nnnggg...

Turns out they had a freind, who 'knew a bit about pcs', and had told them to install office, and when they said they dont know how, he tried.

Its not the people that dont know about computers that do the damage, its the ones that think they do!

Anyways, no problems, I have had loads of help from this forum, no reason why it shouldnt be passed on. :)

Ha, I'd probably be one of the types to ring up with a query that would end up being the simple things. They should start teaching kids about building computers in schools now I think.

I'm now waiting for my delivery, one of the items says "in constraint" and doesn't give a direct date. Whilst the few "expected in 1-2 days" has already drifted onto a week.....I must admit I thought about going straight ahead and cancelling them and buying a PC from Tiny.com...I've heard their reputation isn't very good but for the price it all works out at, I looked at the one with the e code 01182. Best stick to quality though- although just want to play on my new PC ASAP :)

Hey, I'm certainly also looking forward to seeing some reviews on Tesco broadband when people start using it- very reasonable and perfect for a new PC :)

Just letting you know that I have sorted the computer now and am typing on it now :)

Thanks for your help guys!

Also I installed Microsoft SP2, which I think is causing me problems. It makes it go to the fatal blue screen once in a while. The kind man that built it has looked so carefully at the components etc and said it could be the way the drivers were installed for the audio, graphics card etc. However, he said it might be the firewall thing on SP2 which is making it annoying. If I don't have it connected it seems to make a blue screen when say I am installing a game (this might be fluke of course :s)

Also, another quick Q, I reinstalled Freeserve anytime (Wannado- whatever :) ) and it doesn't come down in the right hand corner of the screen anymore with the speed. Is there a wa I can enable this?

Thank you :)

Nick

Right click your connection, then select Properties, then tick "Show icon on taskbar when connected".

Should be similar on XP - I'm using Windows 2000 for various reasons.

Thank you Olly, much appreciated :)

I am still trying to tackle Microsofts SP2, it makes the screen go blue with an error and then restarts after a few seconds. I know it is that, due to me trying to get around the firewall, it doesn't like me checking outlook and then goes blue if I turn it off. I tried stopping it and puting my own new Mcafee one on. It didn't even let me log on so had to take it off in safe mode...is anyone else having this difficulty?

Hope they release an SP2 update soon :(

I am using SP2 with no problem. I very much doubt it is the Firewall causing the problem , you can in any case disable it if you want. It sounds much more like a driver problem. It may be worth checking that you have the latest drivers as well as checking on the MS site if there are any know issues with any applications you are running and SP2. I have not come across any blue screen problems with SP2 on any of the forums I visit so it does not souns to be a common problem.
