That is a little unfair, they may just not have wanted someone messing around with their drive and not leaving it as it was found, when they stood not to benefit. I've had bad experiences helping neighbours out, allowed access via my back garden for some builders to get to neighbours garden without having to drag stuff through their house (I was end of a block with side access). Came home from work to find plants trodden on, pots broken and the builders had used my patio for mixing cement, leaving cement splattered all over the place that was set hard. On complaining they denied it was anything to do with them and were actually threatening and rude. The next door neighbours didn't offer anything to compensate for broken pots etc, just shrugged their shoulders, so the next time they wanted access if was a "NO".
