New Contract

Hi guys,

I just moved to the UK about 6 months ago and now I`m renting an apartment in London (HA30QS). As I don`t know much about how things go around here in terms of contract, price/QoS, downtime, customer support (usually I don`t need this) I need some help in choosing my ISP. I would need unlimited traffic, high speed (>50 Mbps?), 12 months contract, no censorship (torrents, network scans, online streaming/gaming,vpn,tor etc.), no landline included (who uses a landline anymore?), should come without a router or with one that supports modem only (I will be using my dd-wrt powered tp-link n750 for wired/wireless networks), and maybe a tv subscription (not really necessary). So what options do I have that won`t give me a headache, won`t go over 30£-50£/Month vat included, and what documents will I need to setup a new contract (in general) ?

FTTC / "Infinity style" connections are available there. The estimate is pretty much full speed (or at worst 60mbps) for your post code.
You can't get FTTC without a land line (or at least the hidden cost of an unusable land line).

No censorship means you will have to pick one of the smaller providers like AAISP. However AAISP don't do an unlimited package (1TB is their latest one and it isn't cheap when compared with the likes of BT or TalkTalk).

As for signing up - most just accept a sign up online with no physical paper documents required. Just your payment details, address and that is about it.

Modems/Routers.. not many "all in one routers" (BT Home Hub, Sky FTTC Router) support modem only mode.. you would need to buy your own Openreach FTTC Modem from eBay or similar and use that in conjunction with your own router.

You will need a BT phone line for any FTTC products, I can see the cable is also available so if no phone line is a must that is your only option it will be unlimited but read T&C it will also be 12 month contract min maybe longer not been with them for over 20 years.

Just check what Virgin Media has to offer as an alternative, there are unlimited FTTC products available just use the http://www.ispreview.co.uk/list.shtml
 
If taking up Kits's suggestion of cable, do check with the neighbours what it's actually like round there. I am a little out of touch nowadays, but the Harrow area of what is now Virgin Media was originally part of the rubbish Videotron cable network, and stories I heard from people in Harrow about five years ago suggested that Virgin hadn't exactly put a lot of work into improving it.

This being the response I get sometimes from the VM router with no external interference and only one device connected to the AP. Really ... all logs are clean and I can`t wait to move out and use my own gear again. And as per speed ... lets just say I was used with 60 Mb/s as the slowest connection available and had friends with fiber optics coming straight trough the window in the ONT (I truly am disappointed in the UK service in general but that`s another story). All that being mentioned I have to say that at first glance VM now has everything I need, if I`m not obliged to use their equipment (thank you Kits) and they did fix the cable infrastructure (thanks for the tip sentup). I will try to confirm this with one of the VM reps or with the neighbors.
Any other suggestions?

Then at present you will need a phone line to get FTTC if you go with the big companies the line will cost you more I pay £13 a month for my phone line monthly contract then you need to add the cost of the FTTC product to the £13 for me that is another £37 making total £50 a month. I do not make calls on the phone line just incoming all outgoing are on my mobile contract.
