New Ebay Ad Scheme - Default Setting is Opted In!

I don't like the sound of this, and have just been and opted out. Wonder how the opt out affects browsing of Ebay when you're not logged in? I think the default setting on this really should have been 'no, please don't track me and spam me', not 'yes'.

eBay AdChoice

We may use information we have about you to make sure that the ads you see, on the eBay site or elsewhere, are as relevant to you as we can make them. We think these relevant AdChoice ads will personalize and improve your eBay experience. Any information we use for AdChoice follows the eBay Privacy Policy.
We may work with other companies, like website operators and ad networks, to show these ads to you. We do not share any information with other website operators and our ad network partners have access only to some anonymous information about you (like eBay search terms, demographics and categories of interest), which they use to select the proper ads to display. We don't share your personal information with any of these companies, and we have controls in place designed to keep them from identifying you.
You have choices about whether we use your information in this way. You can tell us not to share any of your anonymous information with our ad network partners and you can tell us not to use your information to show you relevant eBay ads on other websites. Anywhere you see the advertising link, you can click on it to control how your information is used. If you opt out of AdChoice, you'll still see ads, they just won't be tailored to your interests.

Yes, please use my information to show me relevant ads from eBay's ad network partners.

I already opted out.

I simply stopped using Ebay. You get more protection buying the stuff out of the back of a car in a pub carpark.

Where do you disable this? I hadn't even been told it existed :( .

On another note, am I the only one that hates eBay's new interface? It was so easy to navigate and search before but now everything is hidden in menus that hide over menus, so you have to do a hundred clicks just to conduct a simple search. Seems to me like they want more pageviews and have thrown usability to the dogs.

Go into My E-bay.
In the menu on the left, under My Account, click Site Preferences.
Under General Preferences, look for Advertising Preferences and click Show.
There are two "Use my information..." lines - both set to Yes by default. Click Edit and you can then untick both of them.

And you're not the only one who doesn't like the new layout. It is tediously slow, wearing on the fingers, and there seems to be so much unnecessary crap trying to load that I begin to wonder whether I do actually have broadband.
I can't see a "Close my E-bay account" button, but I shan't be bothering with it in future.

Edit:
Found "Close my account" under "Related links". :)

I think it was buried in an email they sent out. I didn't spot it either until there was an article on another website - I can't remember which one.

I'm not a fan either - but the decision to stop sellers posting negative feedback is what really annoyed me.

I'm not a big Ebay user anyway, but I am starting to use it less and less nowadays (with the exception of this month, when I bought a new phone and most of the accesories for it on ebay...:)

Cheers for letting me know, I've just opted out. I think it's a dam cheek that you are opted in by default.
Still probably my fault for deleting their emails from them b4 reading but I suppose thats what the scheme is built around, receiving crap info on a weekly basis that the majority of us just delete without reading.

Me too - I did recieve it, but didn't read it.

Thanks for the info as like many of you I too don't always read their emails?.As for Ebay I have not bother with selling on there due to one member saying that if a seller lists any item without a box or manuals or any contents it should be class as stolen? last October I down sized from a 2 b/room flat which had big shed which I stored all boxes but I moved to a 1 b/room flat without any storage hence the boxes went to the dump? plus many items too and scope

I bought an item on ebay on Monday 7/7 at 4pm from a seller with good feedback and who pride themselves on fast delivery.

I paid by bank transfer which takes 3 business days + of course the week-end, so this should have been up and running on Monday 14/7. Today Saturday 19/7 I still haven't received it despite 2 phone call reminders on Wednesday & Friday, where nobody seem to know what was happening.

At what stage do you think I should ask for my money back. I was thinking it would be more than reasonable to leave it until Tuesday 22/7 afternoon and then send a registered letter (not email) to that effect ?

Have you contacted the seller to ask them what has happened? There is always the possibility that your item was lost in the post, in which case the seller will not know there is a problem.

In the past I have had a similar situation, and the seller has sent a replacement item without me having to resort to asking for money back or complaining to ebay etc.

I don't use eBay much anymore, I used to and was quite happy with it, but lately it sounds like it's going down hill... Still, no doubt a huge amount of people will still be using it.

That's the problem - there isn't really a viable alternative :(

thats me signed out of the adverts scheme, hope someone catches up with them too and makes it opt in.

Thanks for pointing it out eeeekkk!

It's amazing how many ppl missed it in the email (myself included)

No problem, at least here it gets treated with the contempt it deserves! I posted it two other places too, one was totally ignored, the other was met with a 'so what' reaction. Can't help some people. :D
