New guy needs help...

Don't know exactly how to ask this but, can someone give me the 411 on ISPs and supposedly whats best for me?

Few things:

- Pretty serious online gamer
- Want the fastest and most reliable internet I can get for someone who plays online alot
- Don't really download much
- Don't really upload much either

So what should I be looking for when choosing an ISP and what scription is best for me? Does "download speed" or "upload speed" have anything to do with lag and being able to play?

Also, majority of ISP speed checks say the max speed I can pretty much get is 2Mb. Is that good enough for someone like me? How can I get better speeds?

Bear with me guys, I'm basically trying to teach myself all this computer and internet jargon so I'm sorry if this is all too deign for you. :(

Thanks to all who reply!! Cheers!!

Hi

Are you able to recive any LLU services on your BT exchange.
Here is a link to check http://www.samknows.com/broadband/broadband_checker

or post back the name of the telephone exchange you are on.

This will help us give you some info on where you stand ect and thn we should be able to advise whats the best services in your area.

Matt

l will note personally, sometimes having LLU services can be weird when your a distance from the exchange, yes they maybe faster but the longer the distance the faster the speed loss.. thats not to say its not a good thing to pick a LLU based service, however l suggest getting them to put you on a ADSL1 port if the speed falls further than what you currently get on ADSL.

If you can get it then Be Broadband and O2 do some good quality unbundled broadband packages (avoid the O2 Home Access option if a check reveals it as the only viable solution for your line). However for multiplayer you might want to consider paying extra for a higher quality ISP like Zen Internet. IDNet might also be worth a shot. Both Zen and IDNet will work from any BT based line. You can also check what unbundled (LLU) services are available to you here:

"Does "download speed" or "upload speed" have anything to do with lag and being able to play?"

Download speed, not so much; upload speed, yes a bit. However latency is the most critical element of any connection for a gamer. You see I could still run a modern multiplayer FPS on an old 128Kbps (0.12Kbps) ISDN connection and it'd perform about as well as my broadband connection today.

The reason is because most multiplayer games are fast paced, they don't rely on shifting lots of data around but are more dependent on how fast the small amounts of data they do move can reach its destination and then be returned (i.e. latency, ping or lag if you prefer). Good quality smaller ISPs tend to be better at this than the big boys.

i need help

can someone please help every time i try to download stuff from filesonic it says there might be a problem with my uk is and i should try to contact provide but not sure what to do next. if anyone has had this message and knows what i can do it would be great as at the moment i cant download anything thank

That sounds like you've either used up your free download quota for the day on Filesonic or that the ISP's (Opal/TalkTalk) Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) filter might be getting in the way. It might also be that the file you're attempting to download has been removed.

One thing you could try is to swap your ISPs DNS servers to OpenDNS and see if that helps (easy to do, details here: http://www.opendns.com ). Otherwise I'd suggest trying to find what you want from a different file host.

If your line can handle it, Be enables fastpath on your line which in theory means lower latency and lower ping. However if you have a bad line, they it also results in an unstable line.

My line could just about tolerate it and pings were from 8-15 with it turned on, and 25-35 with it turned off.
