New ISP Reasearch

Hi All,

Myself and some others are currently reasearching the viability of creating a Broadband ISP. As part of this reasearch we would like to find out exactly what the end user would want from a new ISP so we could do further reasearch into compiling and pricing our packages. The project is still in very early days and may not become a reality for some time if at all, however I would be grateful if you could post what your ideal ISP would offer.

Many Thanks,

Daniel McGiff

Now I'm used to higher speeds I guess I would require the following for my connection which would be basically a No Frills package.

1. Static IP (free)
2. High Upload such as 512K - 1Mb
3. High Download (upto 8Mb for ADSL or 24Mb for ADSL2+)
4. Unlimited Connection, not one of these Capped or Stealth Capped offerings
5. Ability to run Servers on my connection such as Mail and/or Web (HTTP/HTTPS/FTP/IRC etc..)
6. Personally I wouldnt need webspace as my Webserver would accommodate that, the same goes for Mail too.
7. Seperate Phone service (I would like My BT phone Back)
8. Competent CS (if I ever needed support I would like to speak to someone with some savvy rather than a chimp reading a script)
9. LLUed connection (BTWholesale are greedy *******s) so prices for the connection will be low in comparison with BTW's IPStream
10. NO blocked ports

At present my ISP offers some of the above (2,3,4,5,9,10) and is now about to Venture into the ADSL2+ market.

Good luck with your venture if you decide to go 4 it :)

Thanks, how is it outside of the land of plus? I'm no7olivier over there, not sure if I had started posting when you left though (I had been reading since FUP withdrawal).

I'll wait for a few more replied then feedback to the rest of the group.

Glad to be rid of it tbh, now with thier latest stunt (idle timeout disconnecting) and booting out 2 punters coz they were more vocal than others in thier own LOCKED forums, Im glad I left, jeezus, You should see the bulldog forums if You want to see Vocal Punters, lol

THe best way to do thing now would be like a bolt on say a set price for the adsl line for all the different speeds and a set price for the different email packages webspace packages etc with discounts for the more you have or a set price and offer a couple of the services with it of the users choice.

Hang on, not sure if I quite get you there you suggest that the pricing structure should be such that each component of the package is paid for seperatley, with discounts for the more components you take out? If so that's a brilliant idea tha I for one definately hadn't thought of, thanks!

Yeah every bit is a seperate add on for a basic price other things can be added at a extra cost but a 512k adsl line unlimited with a connection to the internet and thats it with nothing else then you can add things like a email and webspace for a extra charge or you give everything at a higher price as a "complete package" deal.

I totally agree with ManOfMeans. Just a basic package would sell.....BUT
At the moment E7 are doing a 512k unlimited package which includes:

Static IP address
50mb of web space
Unlimited POP3 email addresses (anti-virus, anti-spam scanning)
Unlimited email Forwarding and autoresponding
Free .co.uk domain name
Multiple online game servers
Free tech support (email only)

All for only £10

So if you take away all the extras to leave just the 512k broadband connection, what price could you do that for?

I'm sure there is a minimum price that an ISP can do a broadband package for and still make a profit!

rare are they a visp? do they run data stream or iptream? i cant see how they could make a profit.
As far as I know they are not a VISP although I believe they operate at least one visp - adsbroadband. They use Easynet LLU where available, else IPStream and also often offer double speed connection at no extra cost and they also pay £20 referral commission for new sign-ups (which seems to encourage spam) so I doubt they make a profit at the moment.

I guess being late to enter the market, an ISP like E7 either has to offer seriously cheap prices, spend a fortune on advertising or offer something unique. Otherwise I suspect most people would rather choose a well established ISP with a reputation for reliability and fair play.

They appear to have what could be an interesting approach to limit P2P usage (at least that's what I suspect what it is for, or perhaps it's just me being cynical), as it has been reported that they claim to carry out spot checks to ensure that users are not illegally sharing/downloading files.

Indeed they do: http://p2pnet.net/story/4201

I am on IPstream.
They do occasionally offer double speed upgrades (which sadly I can't get) and yes they do have limits on p2p...but only if the files are illegal. (so I've heard)
They do pay the £20 referral as I've had quite a lot now.

I don't know if they make a profit or not, however I hope they continue as I've paid 12 months upfront.
I've also read most of ISPreview posters wouldn't even entertain anything more than a month contract.
I think that's my course of plan after my 12 months are up.

But hey, good luck with your venture.
I ran my own business not so long ago and know first hand just how hard it can be.
