New Linux Accelerated Desktop Eye Candy Videos

Here are some videos that demonstrate the new hardware accelerated Linux desktop, Xgl. In many respects they are eye-candy, although some of the features will actually be useful.

I would have posted stills, but wouldn't be able to do the display effects justice. This post from Miguel de Icaza tells more -

Personally, I don't care about the wobbly windows, or any of the other "eye candy" effects. But what did impress me about the video was how smooth and responsive everything seemed to be.

David Reveman has designed a plugin interface for this new system. So you can add new effects to every interesting event on the desktop.

Wait for next week for the official videos that will be released to get an idea of everything that is bundled in the current edition (the videos do not contain all of it).

So expect some pretty impressive visuals once the plugins start flowing. :)

lol, u kidding, it doesnt even run gnome, kde or any kind of X system, its all command line :D

might stick it in my amd64 rig tho, I'm a sucker for eye candy :D that has a 6800GT in it (should handle it shouldnt it? :p)

Just out of interest i have only used linux once and that was many years ago.

can linux support your games such as BF2 etc, or should i stick to windows. Plus is there a 64bit version out there?

I'm not a game player so Google is your friend Quincy ... yes there are 64-bit versions.

This is a great new video (though it comes in at 57 MB). It shows the new accelerated desktop in action, in far more detail (with some new effects too) than the other videos do. IMHO it's the best video here, so if you only download one then make it this -

Kinda, you need to use something like WINE if there are no linux versions (including BF2) And in really demanding cases the overhead of running WINE will be bad for performance. For gaming, stick to Windows

I've got Debian Sarge running on a server, Debian Etch on my laptop and Ubuntu Edgy Eft running on the shuttle PC in my bedroom.

Also have some Open SUSE stuff at work, but I really hate it with a passion, and the current WIP Linux server I've building is using Ubuntu Dapper.

I think we also have a Mandrake box too - but that's externally managed.

Fedora core 5 on my server and Mandriva 2007 on my main box (I just love the Elastic window effect, lol)

i use suse linux, i tried kubuntu (ordered the cd actually) but i went back to sus in the end

@Robert Naylor why do you hate open suse so much?
