New monitor recommendation

As you can see in this thread (http://www.ispreview.co.uk/talk/showthread.php?t=22337) it looks like my monitor is on it's last legs.

I don't have a clue about which one to buy if I do need to replace it, so any advice (or a good reviews website) would be appreciated.

Ideally I would like a 19" model (widescreen if possible, but on my budget, it probably isn't).

I'd like one that is black or silver.

A big name isn't necessary, but I do want as good an image quality as possible for my budget.

My budget is about £150.

I'm not a gamer or graphic artist, so nothing special is needed.

Thanks

I've got a digimate from Aria. Had absolutely no problems with it.

They do a 19" for just under £140.

Argos do a Samsung 19" (Syncmaster 920n) for £159.99 (I'm using 1 on my Xbox360  ) good if you get it home and find a dead pixel on it, you can take it right back again and get it replaced, lol :D

I take it Samsung (or Argos?) have some kind of dead pixel guarantee then?

Actually, unless the receipt (or a reasonable sized label on the box) states that the monitor may have dead pixels, then, by law, it must be perfect. The salesman must also draw your attention to any such label/statement on the receipt. If you find your monitor does have dead pixels, or develops any dead pixels within the warranty period, then it obviously isn't perfect. Even a single dead pixel means it isn't perfect, therefore it should have either been withdrawn from sale, or sold as second/B grade.

Unfortunately, many dealers say that up to five dead pixels is acceptable, but that is crap. Any fault (and a dead pixel is a fault) must be pointed out at the point of sale.

If you ever have a problem getting a dealer to issue a replacement or a refund, talk to Trading Standards :)

whether your moniter is eligible for a refund depends completely on the manufacturer. a few generous ones will refund for one dead pixel, others for as many as 15 (i know IBM do). Of course this is with your manufacturer, the retailer may be more lenient/stingy

It doesn't matter what the manufacturer says (unless it is clearly stated on the box, as I said before). The contract of sale is with the retailer, and they must comply with the trading laws. If it isn't perfect, they must give you a replacement or a refund. That is the law of the land, and they must abide by it.
As I said, many will try and wriggle out of it by saying the manufacturers consider up to five dead pixels is acceptable, but in this country, if it is sold as "A" grade, it must be perfect and in full working order. If the monitor has dead pixels, and the fact wasn't brought to your attention at the point of sale, they must give you a refund or replacement.

I went through this a few years ago. I bought a 15 inch TFT monitor that had a dead pixel. It wasn't pointed out to me at the point of sale, it wasn't noted on my receipt. It was, however, stated on the box that up to five dead pixels was acceptable, but it was in very small print. The dealer refused to do anything about it, and I went to Trading Standards. They said the trader had no choice in the matter, because it wasn't pointed out to me about up to five dead pixels being a possibility, and the print on the box wasn't clear enough because it was too small. TS threatened to prosecute the dealer, but the dealer gave me a refund rather than go to court.

I must admit that after that story, Argos' no quibble guarantee looks like it might be worth a small premium on the price!
