New PC build.....Graphics cards??!!!

New mobo, cpu and ram pack arrived today, got my case, psu and a small M.2 drive for it on-route also. Next issue I'm having is graphics cards. It appears bitcoin and its brethren are responsible for a huge graphics card shortage. Any cards above 4gb are just currently stupid money. You could have literally spent £150 on a card last year and sell it on ebay for £300 this week! It don't look like things will improve this year either.

Just to give you some idea, I started with PC's back in 1994, So lived through "the golden age" of gaming, initially having a Pentium 2-233mhz and a4Mb ATI Rage pro (one of the first AGP cards), then upgrading to an additional 12Mb 3dfx voodoo2 and then a selection of Nvidia cards later as I built my own pc's and the years ticked by. Nothing has inspired me with PC gaming like the voodoo2 did (or ever since really) as the difference was utterly astounding back then, I doubt we'll ever see a leap like that again. God, seeing "unreal" in 3dfx glide for the first time brings a tear to my eye!

My last pc was a 2008 Dell I picked up cheap and have since canabalised the eyeballs out of it. So it's a little long in the tooth! The only original thing in it is the case and motherboard today.

In my old age I'm not a gamer by a long chalk (occasionally dabble, but lost the will to live with pc gaming 15 years ago tbh!), but ideally i'd like something to last me. RTX are completely out the window at this point, (I fancy a RTX2060 but may as well want a unicorn!) so I've been looking at Nvidia GTX 1050/1060's and the ATI RX 580 ( 4gb GDDR5 cards). On paper the RX seems to out perform the Nvidia, but i'd be interested if anyone has a RX580 card and what they think of it. These can be had for around £130 second hand currently.

What CPU is that? Isn't the integrated gpu enough?

Built a system last year with a £40 Athlon 3000G and the performance is incredible for that price. I don't game, but it runs my dual monitor setup without a hitch, stutter-free video playback, I also run virtual machines.

Ryzen 5 2600x 3.6 (4.2ghz) 6 core 12 thread, with 16gb corsair 3200mhz DDR4. The CPU doesn't come with onboard graphics.

Don't think my current GT640 would cut the mustard... :)

Nice.. built a Ryzen system for my wife couple years back and the cheapest GPU I found for her needs was the Nvidia GT 1030, it's around £60. For her even this is overkill, but needed some CUDA for Adobe stuff. I think it's still holding very well.

I had been hoping to splash out on an Nvidia 3070 myself but that's gone right out of the window. No supply at a reasonable price anywhere, even abroad. The combination of lockdown (people spending more time gaming) and bitcoin has really blasted the market.

Tell me about it Mark, its absolutely ridiculous at the moment isn't it!

Its like the card manufacturers spend so much investment in producing a card capable of so much (Ray tracing anyone!) and instead a bunch of rich kids just buy 200 RTX 3070's and chuck them in a mining rig to crunch numbers. It don't speak highly of Nvidia and ATI to allow this to happen. They should have specific channels for bulk purchases and not allow their product resellers to outsource cards like that and support the gamers who want to use their cards for what they were designed for.

Maybe Nvidia and ATI would be better off producing cards specifically for mining in future so this never happens again.

The annoying thing for me is I'd have been happy with a RTX 2060 (released Jan 2019 was £325 RRP), Its now 2 years old but they're like unicorn poop at the moment too, commanding upto £600 for a low end newish card even second hand! Anything "half decent" on the second hand market is double what it was bought new for Just 6 months ago.

Just crazy!
