Am possibly looking for a new phone after a mishap walking when walking the dog earlier today, was checking the phone for a sec and my big boy chocolate labrador seen a cat and yanked me, I accidental dropped it in a puddle, the phone was a Samsung A52s 5G I would of thought the rating of IP67 it would of survived 10 secs in a puddle, it died within a min of accident.

The phone is currently cover in rice so might live a other day, if it doesn't then I need to looking into a replacement, I normally go for Androids phone most of my friends got Iphone's a number of them over the years have recommended me to switch to iPhone, any one gone from Android based phones to a Iphone any regrets.

My other option I will probably get a other Samsung or a Google Pixel phone.

Just some quick advice based on what I've seen from repair channels, get the phone out of the rice.

Depending on the device, rice can get inside your device and it then becomes difficult to clean out.

Cover your phone in silica gel (hoping I'm spelling this correctly). It'll soak it up a bit better and it won't get inside your device.

I'm sure I saw a comparison somewhere between silica gel and rice in the past, if I find it, I'll link it.

Edit: found it

A quick look on the internet silica gel dose seem a better option than rice, but not sure if it something I can pickup localy or buy off Amazon, rice is easier item to get my hand on.

Get a refurbished iPhone 13 Pro Max. iPhones can be repaired everywhere and more cheaply than other brands.

The trouble with the Pixel 4a is that Google ended software updates in Sep 2023, so to get security patches you'd have to install third-party firmware like LineageOS or whatever it's called these days. My wife is planning to change from Pixel 4a to an iPhone 13 partly for this reason.

Trouble with getting a second-hand iPhone is that they keep their value too well: iPhone 13 go for over £400, whereas you can get a brand new one for £550 (Amazon/Currys/Carphone Warehouse).

There seems to be little benefit with iPhone 14 or 15. The 15 has USB-C but I wouldn't pay an extra £250 for that.

Commiserations! Once, on a visit to Rievaulx Abbey, I'd stopped to read one of the info boards and our Lab pulled me off a 3-ft wall when it saw a rabbit! So I do empathise. When a Lab yanks, you do follow!

The question I ask is whether it's the drop rather than the water that is the issue. An IP67-rated phone should survive immersion in a puddle for a few seconds, unless it was a Granger-size puddle:

I suppose it's well out of warranty? Else if it was water ingress then you might have had a claim it wasn't as rated in the ads (still would I suppose, but whether worth pursuing is another matter).

If you are otherwise happy with the A52s, then check out a place like Back Market for a second-hand one. Indeed, check them out for other possibilities. I got an iPhone 12 for my daughter from Back Market and she was well happy with it.

The Samsung Galaxy A54 5G is an excellent upgrade from the A52s 5G.

There are some good deals on the Samsung galaxy s23 FE 5G (£599 RRP) at the moment. Curry's have a code for £100 off at checkout and you get £100 cashback from Samsung along with free earbuds and 12 months of Disney plus. Deal ends the 25th of this month i think. No idea how it compares to the A series though.

Just to add, i replaced my A52 screen last year and it was relatively simple to remove the plastic back cover. Could pop it off and dry it off better. Can buy something like this to glue it back on. That's assuming the a52s has the same back panel

If you want to go used, a good flagship phone to pick up is the OPPO Find x5 - I picked up the non-pro model for £140, it is great value for money!

The phone survived after a 24 hours rice bath.

The A54 look not bad unlike the model after my current one a53 5G CPU performance is poor than my a52s, the Exynos in the A54 is very similar performance than the A52s in some case might be a tad better.

Pixel 4a bit of a downgrade no 5G and eol for software updates.

iPhone 13 seem a ok choose £550 new and still supported for software updates for a number of years, if I did get a iPhone not sure if it worth adding the extra £200 for the 15.

Personally, I think GSMArena is a good site for all this, they enable you to compare phones from all sorts of different companies. I personally would recommend taking a look at Motorola's models, you can often get fairly high spec phones for much less money:

The only thing with Motorola is they abandon all their handsets very quickly and you get no more updates, the phones are fine but I'd never go back to a Motorola handset because of this.

Great if you don't care about future updates though. :)

Android updates are not the same as iOS updates. With iOS the kernel and the Apple apps are updated together for 5 years, with Android the kernel updates stop after a few years but the Google services and apps are updated forever. So with Android you won't get a bunch of new "features" like iOS but the system is getting updated nevertheless.

I got app updates but no security updates or newer Android versions, not even a single one.

That was a my first 5G phone and it was only out 4 months.

Sticking with Samsung now for 4 future Android versions and regular monthly security updates. (y)
