New router - advice please

By reading a number of different threads on this forum three different wireless routers seem to get a lot of support:

(1) Netgear DG834G
(2) Thomson ST-585v6
(3) 2wire 2700 HG (unlocked)

By all accounts these sound as though they should hold sync better (and possibly higher) than my current 3com device (which is about 3-4 years old - and pre-dates ADSL2+).

Also from this forum I've discovered that some of these can be sourced from dsldepot as B-grade stock for about 20 quid, and I've discovered that digidave sell refurbished versions for about 20-30 quid.

I've got a fairly high loss line - 62-63 dB - and an ADSLMax sync rate that gives a reasonanly steady 1000 IP profile (have briefly had 1250, and ocassionally a frustrating few days at 750 - at least it not as dire as the 500 I used to drop back to :crap:).

Is buying B-grade or refurb'ed routers a safe bet ? (or am I better to go with new items).

From the scant ino I've given above - is there one of the three options above that stands out above the others ?

I'm just a canny Scot looking for any advice I can get before I let the moths out of my wallet :smilet:

Cheers - TP

I'm still slightly tempted to get the newer version of the BT Business hub 2700HGV (the one that can only be 'unlocked' using the DNS fix) off ebay  myself to see if it is really as good as people say it is, but I've already got 2 Netgears :) and a Safecom :p )

Someone's done a write up about theres here:- http://logikir100.tripod.com/ir1002700HGV.htm

I've seen mixed reviews of the dg834g on very long lines, some really positive, and a few complaining that it loses sync all the time

Have you removed the ring wire from the socket or thought about a filtered faceplate as these can both improve signal levels on marginal lines ?? The first of these certainly fits your last paragraph ;)

Thanks butler - also appreciate the humour in the response.

Yes removed the ringwire a few months ago - can confirm that it made a big difference (around 200-300 kbps improvement on a regular basis).

Before removing it very rarely achieved an IP profile above 500 (you coud guarantee at least one sync at below 1152 every couple of days). Now, as I said above, sync rate spend majority of it's time above 1152 (in the 1300-1500 region) :).

If only I could get it to settle regularly above 1440 I'd be able to a steady 1250 profile - and there aren't many on this forum would see that as bliss :p - but it would more than make me happy since I was once told that my line would never even support 500 kpbs fixed rate broadband.

You may still be able to get some improvement by fitting a faceplate filter to the master socket (or wiring the extensions through a plug in filter connected to the master) and connecting the router direct to it.

With the ring wire disconnected I still connect between 300 - 600kbps faster in the test socket (ie with all my extensions disconnected) than with the extensions pluged in, more annoyingly for me having the extensions connected (sans a central filter) causes enough errors to result in a fair amount of packet loss! However, my telephone extensions are very long, run closely parallel to mains cable in places  and some are connected as spurs - which I wonder if it might be causing echos at ADSL's higher frequencies. One of these day I'll get around to sorting the wiring out and running more ethernet, I haven't used most of the sockets since getting dect phones anyway.
