New Rule: ISPs MUST give out MAC codes

Poor poor Isp's they must be thinking "we're idiots".

If they had simply and collectively decided a policy where they regulated themselves, whereby all members agreed to release MAC codes for a fixed price, they would have earned some money from it.

Now they are forced to provide MAC codes at their own cost. Serves them right.

Even worse for them, they never even realised by not releasing MAC codes, they were also reducing the chances of customers joining them from a rival...

Unless there is illegal collusion a braodband cartel, whereby the ISP's have been sharing out the market!

Nah, I wouldn't be shocked to see that happening either. Not implying it is going on mind you.;)

Most isp's are charged customers who want a mac code to leave.

Plusnet, Tiscali, NDO and Fast4 are the isp's will charged you if request the mac code. It won't be free !

Feb 14th is a big joke ! Happy St. Valentine's Day ! It should be NOW !!!

Plusnet also don't charge for a mac code. What they do charge is the migration or setup fees which aren't applied when you join but are deferred over 5 years.
What this rule now means is you could leave without having to pay the deferred fees first.

The ISP I work for have never charged, and from the discussions I have had have never held back on giving mac codes. We just contact the debt collectors ;)

So no changes needed, phew!

ISPs will just have to be a little more aggressive with debts.....
And maybe have a clearer stance on exiting. I suppose most ISPs have this in place anyway, but considering how most people never read the TnCs at any time, they may need to be addressed on signup

Maybe the cost of the MAC could be paid for at the time of signup And then have a one month in advance payment system......Thats what I had at Broadsurf.....It seemed to go well....

I think you may be wrong on all ISPs you listed there.

NDO/ Namesco introduced a mac fee admendment to their T&C's and not long afterwards withdrew it, so their MACs are free.

Fast4 used to charge ( £30) but they have scrapped it.

As far I'm aware Plusnet and Tiscali have never charged for MACs, Tiscali has signed up to ofcom's MAC COP.

ISPs that do charge for MACs (but not for much longer :D ) include Biscit (£35  ), V21 and the V21 resellers (£30  ) and I think Orange but only if you request a second MAC after failing to use the first.

wrong, just left plusnet, no charge no problem.

Best thing Tiscali have ever done! (for me)

Ooh my 1st post - how exciting!

Hello everyone,

just wanted to report my good news - i requested my MAC from Tiscali at 3pm yesterday (due to unbelievably slow speeds, constantly disconnecting etc..) and i'd received it by 6pm!

Lets see if they leave a marker on my line though eh  Will let you know, otherwise Zen BB here i come!

Oh and it was free

That is correct we do not charge for a MAC code they are indeed generated for free

Been quite a little 'earner' for many who attempted to reduce churn rates by introducing a 'Mac' fee...Now that little 'fiddle' has come to an end.... I suspect those who used to charge will think up something else to exact the same revenue out of those who wish to leave...
Perhaps the contract length will be extended for new signees or some sort of 'admin fee' levied to recoup revenue ;)

Maybe, but even if they did they won't be able to refuse a request for a mac even if the user hasn't paid them

mac what mac

Hi,
My first post has to start with a moan I been waiting for my mac code from ehf broadband for more than 10 days now.We have been taken over by 186 and I want to migrate to another ISP.This to me means the quicker the new rules come into force the better they wont even answer my e-mails on the subject at least before take over I WOULD have at least got a response the efh forum does not make happy reading on the subject nor does the 186 forum
thanks

186/ezeedsl still hasn't supplied a MAC (code) to me but have ceased my line so I can (hopefully) go to whichever ISP I choose - and just in time MacWorld (as in Apple Mac) has a feature on the best ISPs for mac users.

Just got to watch my bank account for any 186 fast moves to claim money for a service they didn't supply

Good news, pity we have to wait until mid-February though and Ofcom still hasn't found a solution for situations where people can not contact their ISP to make the request.

... and that was exactly the problem I had, MAC request raised 7 Feb by an email but efhbroadband.com repeatedly advising that MAC requests could only be made on a 186K.com control panel portal to which efh users did not have access.

Eventually got my MAC over 6 weeks after asking, on the same day I registered my complaint with OFCOM.
