Newbie requires help...

Hi there... Been told that you can hook up 2 or more machines to the NTL cable modem...

Ran out and got a crossover cable as advised, tried connecting the two XP based machines via the ethernet ports... and nothing...

What am I doing wrong here?
Is there something i've overlooked?

I Thought XP was meant to be small network friendly...

I've got the bigger machine hooked up to the modem via the USB 2 port, and the smaller machine into the network card, but they don't detect each other...

Is there any way that I can hook up both machines to the cable modem to have equal access, or is this all just a myth?

Any help would be much appreciated, as i'm just gonna rip the cable modem off the wall and bin it at this rate!

I suspect there are two issues here. Do you want to share the connection or do you want to network your machines and connect with both?(is your service contract for one or more machines?).
I have not tried it but there should be an internet-sharing wizard somewhere in XP which will explain what that's about. Not sure how IP addresses are allocated.
Otherwise the home-networking wizard can be used to connect them together, with one connected to net.
Best bet is to go and get a router and some network cards and do it properly but that will cost £50 or so.
If you wait a while someone a bit cleverer will straighten out these points a bit for you.
Good luck

...Thats a big help... but what about the whole server allocated IP address that NTL gives the first machine?

Would a standard ethernet hub work as a router too?

If So, then does it mean that I could share the cable modem if the bigger of the machines has it hooked up to the USB port?

Cheers...

Some cable modems comes wit DHCP server built in if it got a built in DHCP server u can connect straight to a hub and use it.

U can’t just connect any cable modem a hab and use it as NTL will only give u one IP address
