Newbies to Broadband - overwhelmed!

Eclipse is pay monthly so direct debit should be fine. I was refering to an isp that charges 1 year in advance
Ahh yes, no worries though cos it's only a debit card and my order is completed now. I'm really excited!! (how sad am I?!)

Also they are based in Exeter which is close to me. I just had their initial confirmation email, so far so good.

Thanks so much everyone for all your help!
edit* Oh my! Already the tracking system shows they are placing the order with BT, just 7 mins after completion of the order!

I pay for eclipse monthly by DD. All is good but yesterday i was suffering from 56KB/s max download speeds, seems ok now though.

You won't get many people recommending Naims on these forums. They're just another V21 off-shoot, more than likely sharing the same services and support. Do yourself a favour and stay well away.

Just to point out once again, Yes we resell Netservices broadband as do V21 and several other ISP's through out the U.K., Yes we do, as a VISP make use of V21 infrastructure. But No we are not an off shoot of V21 ,we are a seperate company, they are in Surrey, we are In Scotland.

Thank you

i have also been looking for several months for my first bb isp have looked at everything on the isp lists with a fine tooth comb liked eclipse but would rather have at least 1mb not 512k, bulldog 1mb is £19.50 unlimited, demon are £20 for unlimited 2mb free connection and modem 1 year contract, but having some speed and customer service issues at present. have heard of many isp going down the tubes aol have been going strong for years one of the biggest names in the net now getting 1mb for £15 6months then £18 free modem and setup same as eclipse but twice the speed without flexing for the same price and similar t & c 's this is the one i shall probably opt for within the next week have several friends who have used it for 18 months they have never been let down. main problem is customer service if you get the indian call centre but all companies can have bad or poor reps. should have checked out my thread here join the revolution which many members have given some good advice, or my honest aol thread in the aol subsection. another favorite isp i may take up is blueleaf who are giving 2mb 25gb for £22 per month if limit is reached you are dropped down to 512k which gives u unlimitted use free connection and modem and a 3 month contract with a £45 connection fee penalty if u leave before 12 months. very fair.

Call it what you like, you rely on V21 to keep afloat, that's enough for me. Your services come down the same pipes as V21's, you use the same 'infrastructure' and probably same support as well. V21 customers can log in to your members portal, yes? You charge £30 for a MAC code, as do V21. To any sane person that's just V21 dressed up as something else, it's just the profits go into a different pocket! Or do they? Steve Kay ring any bells?

Do you use the same antiquated payment system that takes money whenever it feels like it, 30 days, 25 days, 19 days? Wonder how many people have lost hundreds of pounds from this illegal practice and don't even know?

How about you post the T&Cs on here and we can all have a jolly good laugh. Maybe there's an Internet Manual too!:D

Naimspeople edited out a quote from above post that said:
"Court not the votes of the fickle mob"

Here's another slogan you could take up:
Court the votes of the gullible mob!

We did enter that quote then decided to keep our response Professional. However speaking personally ,having watched this site for a long long time, it does seem that those with gripes, for what ever reason, use it a sounding board at every opportunity to down the companys that have upset them personally and promote those, that up and till now haven't. Then when these top companies hit a bad patch, the pack are there to rip them to shreads.

It is a shame that most of the satisfied customers have got better things to do with their time.

But you are right, folk enter the forum to ask for advice and are fed the flavours of the month, gullible indeed!

You may see it that way, but surely it's a good thing that the masses have a voice? After all, they can't voice any negative comments on V21's forum without it being deleted, then to be threatened with being banned. Your forum possibly may differ.

It is a shame that most of the satisfied customers have got better things to do with their time.

Does that mean you'd like them to speak up more for Naims on these boards? Considering Naims' standing on the Top 10 page, it looks like you don't need it.

But you are right, folk enter the forum to ask for advice and are fed the flavours of the month, gullible indeed!

Taking into account the previous point, that's akin to calling your customers gullible

Go NDO/NamesCo and you will have no sorrows. I been here 5.5 months and no regrets whatever. ;)

That is the point , we do agree the masses should have a voice but generally it is not really the masses

No that isn't what was meant by our comment, we meant inexperienced people enter the forum asking for advice about ISP's and those with a view based on a personal experience against one ISP will off load their woes and these people will read it and take it without any qualification about the person giving it or the story. I personally know several people that have signed up with Tiscali and none of them have any complaints ,
but not one will enter this site and support them.

Anyway we have taken this thread off track .SORRY!

So does having a grievance against your, or anyone else's company, disqualify folks from belonging to the masses?

If you look around on these boards there's plenty of positive comments being made of decent ISPs, I just think a lot of companies can't handle negative comments............ as you sow, so shall you reap.

It's probably my fault for dragging this thread off topic, apologies for that.

nodrog - I think each of us just needs to find our own perfect solution. The way I looked at it is this: If eclipse is really as good as they say, then 512k is not bad at all for day to day surfing. When I want to flex my speed I can, and very cheaply. I'll let you know how I get on, they should get the confirmation from BT through by the 28th late afternoon.

I think readers of this forum will be very wary of any company that is even remotely connected with V21.

Oh and we have seen " seperate " companies before that share infrastructure, remember Gio / Activeware...

You can't judge them all to Gio standards if one checks back to the start of Gio there was always problems, always selling internet too cheaply or free off peak hours. Then loads out for a free ride this is mainly what causes downfall of a company.

I would personally not recomend the cheapest ISP as this would normally bring its own problems with connection and /or speed problems.

Witchypoo, you might get lucky like I did. I am on a 512 package, and I never flex (dont even have the software to) and I am on 1.5 MB! I assume this is near the capacity of my line or some such, but its certainly higher than 512kb.

Erm, excuse me Kits, how on earth can a customer or customers " cause the downfall of a company "??

I certainly do not recall anyone getting a " free ride " with Gio / Activeware etc, quite the contrary in fact. I seem to recall it was they that were getting the " free ride " taking unauthorised funds from customers accounts.

The " downfall " of any company is caused by the ( mis ) management of the company, period.:(

Sounds just like another ISP I know of. Begins with V. ;)

I have to disagree with that, the standard of advice given by members of this forum to people looking for a broadband ISP has, on the whole been very high. No one could reasonably describe ISPs like NDO/Namesco,Zen, Eclipse and others recommended in this thread as "flavours of the month". I think I'm right in saying that they have been recommended by members here for a very long time, I seem to recall NDO being recommeded to me here about 3 years ago.

Gullible people read unqualified phrases such as "unlimited", "No download Restrictions" and sign-up without carefully reading the Terms and conditions. And also don't check for catches like £30 for a migration code.
