Newbies to Broadband - overwhelmed!

Agree with your theory on companies going out of business too.

If a company decides to seemingly offer 'something for nothing' then it's their own fault if people take them up on the offer. Particularly taking into account the motives of such companies for doing so, being to ultimately get more customers, become huge and make millions.

That would be great old dude!
I got on here to find at 5:30 they updated my tracking with the news that my connection will be active some time on 1st Feb :)

Then Eclipse have done everything they can, its now down to BT.

But quite often its done early, so as soon as you get your equipment and details (username password etc), set it up and check every so often to see if its working.

-----------------------

I also disgree with the 'flavour' of the month comment. As previously said, I have been with eclipse for over 2 (maybe 3) years, with *no* problems. How many people can say that nowadays? Not many.

Making people pay for a MAC code is out of line IMO.

If a company doesn't charge a connection fee, then it's almost excusable to charge for a MAC code, but V21 for example used to charge £70 for ADSL activation and then £30 for a MAC code. Now that's out of line!

I doesn't really matter anyway, because, even disregarding the mac fee they are apparently introducing a one year minimum contract and still charging £47 for activation and have a 40Gig limit. ISPs like Eclipse whose one year contract with free modem and activation can be cancelled early for a very fair termination fee offer better value for money.

I wouldn't want to be tied to a one year binding contract unless I was making a considerable saving - even then I would be reluctant in case the service quality declines or I have to move house.

That'll change it from extremely difficult, to just about impossible to leave. Tag the 'brand new customers only' attitude on to that, with a dose of £12 stitch up every time you want to change packages, then job's a good'un.

Okay, I've installed the drivers and USB modem, activation date not till Wednesday so unsurprisingly it doesn't appear to be set up yet. Am I right in thinking the filter/splitter won't work for the normal line yet, if I fit it before actvation? I tried it with the dial-up modem plugged into the landline side and it couldn't detect the normal dialtone so I removed the splitter.

I dont think it's fair if a user pays for line activation and also has to pay for the MAC code but if you got free activation modem etc then i dont see the harm in it, the company has to cover its costs some where activation is 40 from BTw and a simple USB modem is 20 quid times that by 5000 users the company has paid out 30k just to get the users in and then gives them a line at barely enough to cover the wholesale costs just so they can stay competitive, im not defending any ISP here just giving the bigger picture, if i was opening a ISP right now i would charge for line activation and not give any free modem etc.

It should of found a dial tone, ive known people to use broadband and dial up on the same line, when you plug a phone into the filter does that geta dial tone?

No worries, one of the cables was put in the wrong place - duhh! :)
I should have known I was too tired to take in what I was doing.

The modem, filters, etc are all up and running - just keeping trying for the connection now. Talk about impatient!
cheers for the help :)

best of luck when connection happens will keep an eye here to see how it all goes before i take the leap. please keep the thread updated.

Thanks nodrog :)

I've been turfed out till now as my husband went on a downloading frenzy, the Eclipse connection is activated at a really superb speed (I hope I don't jinx it by saying that!) So far I have nothing but praise for them, they really got on and arranged all this within 24 hours all I had left to wait for was modem and activation, modem arrived friday and welcome pack Monday, activation occurred sometime after lunch today :)
