Nexfibre - Rollout Discussion

This may prove to be of little interest to the majority but it's a chink of light at the end of a very dark tunnel for me and I thought this thread may be useful to track any potential Nexfibre rollouts.

My story -

For several years I've been backwards and forwards with Openreach regarding their deployment of FTTP to the remainder of our estate. A cluster of properties can get it but the remainder can't and the last four years have seen several false dawns and cancelled projects. While there has been a flurry of Openreach activity of late, and we are now included in their plans "By 2026" that's as far as we've got. As a result, I've taken that as being cautiously optimistic but otherwise not paid too much attention and resigned myself to just waiting and hoping.

Two altnets also showed interest, Exascale and SWS, the latter of which confirmed an availability date of "Spring 2024" and took pre-orders only for that to be cancelled when they underwent a recent restructuring/acquisition.

In the meantime, I've been tracking BIDB and one.network for signs of Openreach activity in the area that may indicate something tangible taking place but that's devoid of anything recently. However, when I checked this morning I can see a number of Nexfibre work permits have been issued across the village for this week, including at the entrance to our estate. Furthermore, if I download their latest rollout update - https://www.nexfibre.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/nexfibre-network-rollout-Q3-2023-NEW77.pdf - Our village is included.

This may all lead to nothing but it's a glimmer of hope. That all being said with their ambitious rollout plans I expect to see more discussion and dialogue on them over the coming months so figured a central thread may prove useful.

If nothing else I can keep this updated and compile a timeline of events from my initial discovery of Nexfibre drawing down permits to something more tangible that may result.

EDIT - Just in case anyone stumbles across this and reads the post above, our installation was completed on Feb 17th and we now have VM XGS-PON.

Timeline of our rollout and installation is in the following post - https://www.ispreview.co.uk/talk/threads/nexfibre-rollout-discussion.40908/post-346191

Svella contractors are on the estate today lifting lids (no GDU in sight but that's their concern) and checking for blockages. Upon speaking with them they're here working on behalf of "VM" which given the lack of DOCSIS presence in the area I'm taking to mean they're here on behalf of NexFibre (which aligns with my post above)

Really pleased for you. Had a colleague who lived on that estate and could not believe it when he said his max speed was 30Mbps.

Virgin have done a large expansion in Muxton in Telford and a large build in Shrewsbury.

I guess the pace of the rollout will be down to what they actually need to install. If they need to install their own ducting and taps it will be slower than using current ducting.

As far as I am aware Shifnal is DOCSIS HFC but on new builds in DOCSIS HFC areas in Telford, Virgin deploy their FTTP service. It doesn’t make sense them installing copper now.

Nice, they are quite quick and getting it set up and installed, just need them to start unlocking the speeds now -.-

I am in a nexfibre area - I live not far from Tondu which is listed on their recent rollout documentation that it should be live in the next 3 months. There are many postcodes between my street and the active cabinet location where VM is now available, but I think a lot of those are available via Poles. Where I live it's all been dug so I am waiting for someone to connect our individual street up. Was dug up in October, still waiting.

Definitely good progress there, won’t be too long 👌

Yeah fingers crossed. Currently with AAISP and Starlink so that's not been a cheap endeavour, will likely keep AAISP and pause Starlink though. AAISP gives me routed IP blocks which have proven useful for testing things for my actual day job (I work for an AltNet)...

More progress today. Svella (Nexfibre) are back on the estate. They have installed a grey cabinet today at the entrance to the estate and are pulling fibre up the access road from the village.

They seem to working at quite a pace having achieved quite a lot in the space of a week.

I'm eagerly awaiting a leaflet dropping through the letterbox (I'm trying to be glass half full)

Nexfibre have been doing a lot of work here in the BL0 area. They dug up the pavement to lay fibre on our street last month and have fixed some housing to the top of the pole.
Virgin came on Friday morning, asking if they could park their cherry picker at the end of the drive while they fixed some equipment to the pole. They were told this was fine, but then simply drove off without doing anything.
Some Douglas telecom vans were here with ladders today, but didn't do anything before driving off also.
Hopefully they come back as it would be a shame having done all the groundwork and put everything in place to not finish off.

There's been cabinets in my street for weeks and weeks but no sign of being available. Depending on where those cabinets connect to upstream there may still be a lot of work to be done. In my case I have spotted roadworks notices for this week just outside my street that I saw them deploying fibre to at the same time as they dug my street out, so that work is being done.

But of course, I don't know what village you are in or the state of the surrounding build - it could be ready shortly as you say - it's all a big unknown is the problem, unless you happen to be part of the build/planning teams

Our estate is UG-fed and they spent a few days pulling fibre through (presumably using Openreach PIA), they've installed a cab and they've pulled fibre up the access road leading from the village. All in the space of 7 days.

As you say I'm sure there's a lot more to be done. However, as a group of residents who've seen little evidence of any progress with Openreach it's been refreshing to see such a hive of activity from Nexfribe in such little time.

If it takes another 3, 6 or even 12 months so be it. It's simply good to see an alternative to OR actually doing something in our vicinity.

What speed do you get on Openreach?

Do Openreach not have a USO to provide 30Mbps as a minimum?

We have seen FTTP infill in Telford for areas where 30Mbps on FTTC was not possible.

Ridiculous really.

Openreach have been in the process of infilling our estate with FTTP but that project has been delayed, cancelled, restarted etc multiple times which I alluded to in my opening post.

That said I'd rather keep this thread on topic and focus on the promising (so far) Nexfibre rollout :)

I quite agree. Openreach's response to my queries about full fibre have been frankly dismal, with them telling me "June 2025", then "You are not in any build plans" then "Oh sorry, you actually are in a build plan".

I take nexfibres deployment as a massive positive step because I'm sure Openreach want some piece of that too and won't simply let VM be the only full fibre provider in streets like mine.

Yeah it is the big machine and who knows, really how they do it

Are there any existing VMO2 (Nexfibre) customers on here?

I'm curious what packages they offer and prices but it doesn't seem as simple as checking the VM website and inserting random postcodes as I imagine the bulk of packages and prices returned will be HFC/DOCSIS related.
