Nexfibre - Rollout Discussion

Funny thing is no one was interested until an altnet came along and swept up lots of customers and Virgin resorted to door knocking to try to get customers back. LOL. Now OR are planning fiber installation too, before they were not interested even though residents wrote to OR. Funny old world. Wish Starlink had a reasonably priced package like the E40 in France, would sign up in a jiffy.

most of our area can order it now, digging started in March. areas pole fed were available a few weeks ago, now most of the underground is able to order. just ordered 2gb symetrical (and a new network card)

Our town doesn't appear anywhere on any updates/literature from Nexfibre (it's served by Virgin Media's HFC). But there's been a lot of Nexfibre activity lately - including on roads already covered by HFC. And then separately Virgin Media also doing work on newly built roads that don't have HFC.

From when they are doing this, how long after do Virgin go live with Fiber internet?
Took 7 months from digging to being able to order. I've previously said I'd never have VM but the lure of 2Gbps... I caved.

What area? Same with Colchester but it is on their latest report

4-5ms for me to 1.1.1.1, and razerblue in manchester for speedtests

thats decent, i few locally i have tested are 8-12ms, they are all pole fed - no idea if this makes a difference on the local routing (i am underground fed). looks like an absolute shitshow at the top of the poles

are you pole or underground and what is your rough location? thanks

11-12ms to 1.1.1.1 via VM
8-9ms to 1.1.1.1 via AAISP

Noticed a few postcodes in Stamford, Lincolnshire are showing availability on Virgins website. Only the odd property is showing up for a given postcode so I guess an Upp to Virgin migration?

What areas of Stamford are you looking at? All the postcodes I've tried have Virgin avaliable to order.
On a side note I believe Upp closed for existing customers today and they are going around installing Virgin routers, I had mine installed today and the ping is way higher than what it was on Upp, but the speed is around 400mbps faster. I'm not sure what I would rather to be honest

PE9 2EP, PE9 2EG

Great news!
Virgin Media is available at PE9 2EG
You can get top broadband speeds of up to Gig2.

Work started in early April here(BB18). The service went live for orders 2 days ago now and I've already had Virgin Media sales reps at the door.

Don't think I want to deal with Virgin Media again after the issues I had with them before. If I do choose VM it'll be when they wholesale and I have options from other providers.

Also, the idea of nearly being forced to use provider-issued equipment (Hub5x) without a working modem only mode doesn't sit well. Especially since multi-gig services are entering the market.

I think the best way around the lack of modem only mode currently is to use the WAS-110 XGS-PON module. But that itself is just a hacky workaround. It's also $160!+shipping

Hopefully, when VM/Nexfibre do wholesale, other providers will use different equipment or there's a better/permanent solution to modem only mode.

I can tell you, that WAS110 is worth every single penny.

Any risk of Virgin preventing access via an SFP if they get wind of it?
Yes, VM know we aren't using their router as their management software can't connect to it. You also pass data to Nexfibre when you establish the fibre connection to their kit and I am 99% sure we are not sending the correct information. If they cared they could detect it but it is probably a very small minority that aren't affecting the network anyway

Probably, but do they go out inspecting every ONT on their network? Probably not. If they did I'd have to remind them about their lack of modem mode is why we're doing this in the first place.

is it? or will people be left with a paperweight when NF/VM decides they want to put an end to it.

Also, if I were using the WAS, and there's some kind of config change on the NF/VM side, am I going to lose connection until I can replicate the change? Just seems like a hassle of playing cat and mouse if that is the case.

I am interested though. But the options as I can see are: 1. play the cat and mouse game and hope they just don't care ever.
2. Be forced to use ISP equpiment..yuck

In that case then, you're stuck with the hub5x.

I doubt they care, unless we were causing a problem.
