Nexfibre - Rollout Discussion

is it? or will people be left with a paperweight when NF/VM decides they want to put an end to it.

Also, if I were using the WAS, and there's some kind of config change on the NF/VM side, am I going to lose connection until I can replicate the change? Just seems like a hassle of playing cat and mouse if that is the case.

I am interested though. But the options as I can see are: 1. play the cat and mouse game and hope they just don't care ever.
2. Be forced to use ISP equpiment..yuck
The only way it would stop working is if NF do enforcement. When the the Hub5x connects to the NF kit it sends some very specific data. We are more than likely sending the wrong info now as we don't actually know what is sent. This means NF could stop it if they wanted to but people have been using the WAS-110 for close to 4 months now. If NF want to stop it then there probably isn't much we can do but the fact they want to be a wholesale network would mean they would have to potentially whitelist a lot more devices in the future if they want to lock it down. If we did have the exact information that is sent then I believe there is nothing they can do as we would be sending what they would be checking for. This would require taking apart a Hub5x and getting trying to get the firmware off it though

I expect it will be ok providing no one tries to do anything naughty with it, and there is no compatibility issues caused by it on the PON. The hub5x seems like it was released before it was ready, and I guess a much lower priority fix for its issued compared to the standard hub5.

If they get modem mode working properly on the Hub5x I've got no issues with using it at all.

Hi. I'm in a NexFibre XGS-PON area, and fibre installers came to my street (contract workers for Virgin) and laid cable in the ducts, all work was completed by the 12th of August. As far as I know, they have not blown fibre through the ducts yet. We made a request to put the Virgin Toby box adjacent to the garden, which they managed without issues.

There was a nearby grey cabinet installed at some point, while this work was going on. Is there any way to know when the work will be complete, e.g. so we can put an order in with Virgin?

Be prepared for a wait. I was at your stage in October and I ordered my connection in June. On the other hand, it might also be weeks - it is done when it is done.

As dee.jay quite rightly said it's done when it's done and you can't really predict when that will be.

If it helps this was the timeline of my NexFibre rollout (but yours may differ wildly) - https://www.ispreview.co.uk/talk/threads/nexfibre-rollout-discussion.40908/post-346191

Thanks.

Haven't seen any activity in my street for about a week, until today. I think they are blowing fibre at the moment. I'm pretty clueless about how this process actually works, and at what points they need to access street infrastructure. There is another grey cabinet on the other side of the street that I noticed today also. I haven't seen any of these works mentioned on better internet dashboard or other websites.

I'm guessing that I might be able to order at some point in September.

My thoughts in general, are that Virgin's M125 internet package isn't that cheap relative to some other FTTP ISPs (probably due to a lack of competition in many areas). But the value can be improved a bit perhaps if you can get the Volt boost, to increase data transfer speeds.

I think that upload speeds will improve over time, and presumably will be upgraded as Openreach completes trials for 1gbps symmetric speeds, in order to remain competitive.

For me maybe a bit different as I was on the trial, but
January 2023 first noticed the boxes going up,
April 2023 managed to get on the "trial"
May 2023 installtion.

if your certain its coming, do what I did, and get some internal work prepped so you can have it nice and tidy / coming up where you want it too etc, I now have OR and VM fully internal coming into the house and under the suspended floor up under the stairs where the networking bits and bobs are, its so nice to see no cables ran around the skirting etc lol. (ripped out copper line as soon as I could)

I'd also recommend when ordering, (if you want a "high" package) is to order 2 packages below the one you want, if you or anyone at home has o2, so say you wanted 2gig, you'd order 500m for arounnd £31(+£6 if you want upload) so £37 you'd then volt it for free to 1gb, £31 for 1000/100 (£37 for 1000/1000) the nfew months wait and ask if they have any deals on 2gig :P managed to get mine for £6 extra so I only pay £45 for 2000/2000.

but tbh I was happy with (for at the time) £39 for 1000/1000, the offer for 2gig was just a good deal tbh.

There are always deals and "work partner links" so just ask about ;)

(current partner prices for reference)

We recently finished installing an ethernet CAT6A cable from where most of the LAN wall sockets in the hall are located, to our front room (under floorboards and hidden inside the wall in the front room). The Virgin line will be installed through our garden to the front room, if all goes to plan.

We will probably get a 2.5gbps switch at some point in the hall.

The only thing we're unsure about, is whether or not it will be possible to use the existing telephone extensions (for PTSN) for VOIP, while keeping our existing landline number. There's quite a helpful video which explains how the rewiring is done, here:

But, it looks like the router has to be directly connected to a junction box (which would be installed next to the master socket in the hall), so I've no idea if it's possible, since I presume the router + VOIP basestation will need to be in our front room.

Does anyone know if the VOIP basestation can be installed at other points on an ethernet LAN network? Or does it have to plug directly into the router?

EDIT - Sorry for the long post. At the link below, it says that WIFI VOIP phones don't need a base station:

Does that mean multiple WIFI VOIP phones can connect to nearby WIFI access points?

love watching that channel

We're probably going to go with desktop VOIP phones (with an ethernet port), and use these with A&As VOIP service.

They sell Yealink T31P phones on their website, so I think a few of these units could be a good option. I've heard you can connect desktop IP phones to an ethernet switch, and they should be able to pick up the required network settings from your router.

Do most VOIP services play nicely with Virgin's Hub 5 router?

EDIT - there's even a helpful wiki site for A&A VOIP configuration for various handsets, here:

I always wanted a Cisco VoIP phone at home, you can get 10 a penny off eBay. Think I will do it for the poops n gigs.

So VOIP phones always need to have the ports forwarded on the router, for each IP address /device?

Or, can UPNP sometimes automatically open the required VOIP ports?

How well do SIP ALGs work?

I have a VoIP system at home - it just needs to be able to talk my VoIP providers SIP server outbound, and the SIP provider has a whitelist for my static IP so nobody can willy-nilly attempt to sign into my account for me.

I can see some nexfibre works getting close to this area now, which I guess makes sense as VM just completed a new cabinet installation a few streets away from here.

Nexfibre/VM FTTP might happen before OR does (they just installed a new pole yesterday in the street across to provide more FTTP even whilst half covering underground)

Although OR does have work scheduled for about a month away for fibre layings underground not far from here, so who's to know. Their checker still says up to Dec 2026 that I know of, and been multiple times when it went from 12 months to 31 Dec 26 already.

Being a multi dwelling unit anything could happen.

Either way whatever does happen it'll be nice to get off of ADSL/fttc whenever something becomes available

Pretty sure nexfibre will get OR up a gear. I was December 2026 with OR until March where I was suddenly in plan and then live in the next month.

Some fibre engineers are doing some more work in our street today. According to my dad, they are currently testing the cable. Apparently, it's likely to be a few more months before the line is ready for service. The fibre cable hasn't been blown yet, is that normally one of the final stages?

The contractors dug my street and blew all the fibre in almost one year ago. I could not order anything until it went live in June. How long is a piece of string?

VM have confirmed to me I'm now covered by the Nexfibre build.

Have there been any signals to when wholesale access to the network will start, so we can see some MVNOs selling XGS products (e.g. Giffgaff article sometime back).

My local area has been covered by Nexfibre now for getting on for two years. Engineers locally confirmed that all the fibre is ready for service but due to other issues elsewhere in the customer disservice layer in the VM empire they can't sell connections in my area yet. All new orders are still provided on HFC.

If VM are that incompetent in being able to sell their own connections on their own FTTP network gawd help them being able to market and provision the NexFibre network on a wholesale basis to other networks. I might be wrong but I suggest you shouldn't hold your breath.
