Nexfibre - Rollout Discussion

Sorry if this is hijacking but it seems relevant to general topic.

Are there any Nexfibre customers here could advise what they have done for traditional landline provision (if anything)? I presume there is no telephony with the service.

Wondering if I can port my number as its still used by elderly relatives.

If not is there a decent SIP service they are using for non-mobile telephony?
Andrews and Arnold for me, ported my number off Sky VDSL coming up one year ago now.

Nexfibre is the roll out project, not the ISP.

You’ll be ordering via the VM website.

All new builds are running on the same infrastructure you’ll have.

You’ll be able to get the VM TV service too.
Nexfibre is actually the name of the company that owns the network, its not an internal project name.

I asked a similar question on thinkbroadband.

For me I don’t need a landline but if I recommend VM as an option to friends and family I wanted to know how best to manage their need for a traditional landline.

I’ll likely be suggesting either A&A or voipfone

Yip, thanks Kris_: The contract will be with VM but I mentioned Nexfibre to be distinct from VMs normal offerings. So I think you and I are in a very similar position. VM don't seem to offer any telephony alongside the Nexfibre (XGS-PON) service. I am moving from a FTTC broadband and telephone (PSTN/copper) service so potentially lose my longstanding telephone number which is used to call me by elderly relys.

So I'm looking to see what if anything others have done with a similar move. e.g. Can I port my number onto someone's SIP offering? Just looking at Options if I effectively lose landline telephony in the move to VM over Nexfibre.

Having now read the responses to your question posted on VoIP for Beginners at https://forums.thinkbroadband.com/general/4749250-voip-for-beginners.html#Post4749250 on thinkbroadband I can see the various SIP provider options and that I can potentially pay BT/OR a one off porting charge.

So I am off to do further research on SIP providers.

Deffo recommend A&A. I moved my Broadband and ported my number to their VoIP service around a year ago now. Had their broadband right up until VM went live with XGSPON in my area in August.

Still got the VoIP service from them, really cheap if you only use it to receive incoming calls! Got it linked to a Grandstream handset that i'm also using with an old Sipgate account.

Thanks AshtagDOTuk, will also have a look at A&A then.

I can't see definitively that A&A will readily port my number to them if I'm not using their broadband. I think in your instance you were a customer already and migrated away from their broadband but kept VoIP with A&A? I will have to ask them.

Thanks @Martyn - I note your sig states "Gig2" but I couldn't' see that in the screenshot. Did you get that through a trial or something?

Edited to correct blatant typo. I was still waking up when I posted this.
Yeah I've been on the trial for around 9 months now, was upgraded to 2gig the other week.

Only downside is my Pi is slightly struggling now with the faster speedtests -.-

Sorry for all the questions. I'm trying to educate myself as I go.

I've spoken to the NexFibre contractors today who said this was the last day of blowing fibre through the ducts and they would be back in January to carry out splicing. I asked if they were installing CBTs in January too and he said "We don't use CBTs, we use something similar" but wouldn't (or couldn't) elaborate.

Can anyone familiar elaborate? I'm simply curious and trying to learn.
I have a bit of info/images here https://www.ispreview.co.uk/talk/threads/how-long-does-it-take-for-virgin-pia-installs.39218/

looks like it is £15 one time to move a number, then £1.44 / mo? and it will be with you forever, no matter what company you choose to go to, I think there are even options to have it port to a mobile number. It depends on how much you use your home phone, got rid of mine years ago and finally talked my mother into getting rid of hers, only people who called were trying to sell her crap :P

If I ever need a landline, I'd go for VoIP and on A&A 100%.

The Virgin website is now showing their services available to my address in the BL0 area. Following through the order process it looks like the earliest install date would be the 16th of January.

Lucky you, but good to see it is progressing, lots of work still going on in my town, whilst my street was dug in October, am still waiting to place an order.

We've got more work permits issued for NextFibre later this week so it looks as though they're coming back to crack on with things after the holiday period.

just don’t cancel your current service until you’re connected.

Our street was “live” on 22/12 but then they emailed on 30/12 saying there was a delay. Thankfully I had gone with EE and so i wasn’t directly impacted.

“We recently got in touch to tell you Virgin Media broadband was available in your home. Unfortunately, due to unexpected technical problems, some more things still need to be set up – so our broadband isn’t ready to use just yet.

We’re sorry for the delay and we’re working quickly to sort things out. We’ll keep you updated and let you know in the coming weeks when it’s up and running.”

Thanks Kris,
I think I may actually wait until the next round of RPI related increases in April or until there is a decent deal. I'm lucky enough to have line of sight to a Three 5G mast and see speeds in the 500/70 to 1000/100 range, depending on the time of day, using their home broadband service and hub.

Other people on this street who are not as fortunate will welcome the availability of fibre; this area is served by aluminium phone lines, instead of copper, connected to a cabinet that is miles away. I previously had FTTC and the speeds were around 12Mbps down and 1 up and know of people with slower speeds paying BT the equivalent of Virgin's Gig1.

More Nexfibre activity this week. I observed them lifting lids and moving existing (albeit unused) Openreach CBTS to one side and adding their own boxes.

Same here, notices right past my street for clearing blokages and many other VM roadwork notices across my village, with a few Openreach ones popping in too...

just use an F&F link usually a few floating around Reddit.

my 2gig has been fine, not noticed much difference in the way of day downloading, but upload being 200mb is nice,
