Nexfibre - Rollout Discussion

Where I live in whitby...North yorkshire...last year around October....I noticed a bloke in a on behalf of virgin media jacket looking at a pole a few streets away....legged it over to him and asked if virgin was coming to our town..he said yea they are surveying around town and should be available next year...nexfibre haven't updated there roadmap..still showing September listing.. on there it states my town will be this year..but no time frame...so not in the within 3 months section..

I use bibd and one network to check for roadworks..but I also use....and I believe is best..

Full detailed information on telco works.. over the moon to see yesterday..vm locations planned worked in March...not in my street thoe yet..but I will be glued to the site to see when they plan my street..been waiting for decent fttp for years.. :-)

Awesome find, this site gives the roadworks job details where as Bidb lacks this.

When they came and did this area, there were weeks and months between work. On my street, for example, they pulled fibre to every pole except the one cloest to my house on the cul-de-sac, but they did return a few months later to dig up the pavement and lay fibre to that pole.

My installation took place on Saturday bringing my rollout to a conclusion. As a result, I thought I'd provide an update, if anyone is interested, chronicling dates and events.

For context, our estate (built in 2016/2017) is UG-fed and Openreach has been deploying its GPON rollout very slowly over the last two years. As a result, I'd gotten into the habit of checking One.Network and BIDB for any Openreach roadworks which is where my NexFibre story begins -

11th December 2023 - Upon checking One.Network I see for the first time work permits associated with "Nexfibre" in the vicinity of our estate. I conducted further research and their September 2023 rollout update/plan confirms our village was in the build plan for 2024.

12th to 15th December 2023 - Nexfibre (Svella) engineers are on the estate lifting lids and checking ducts. They then install their own straws across the estate. At the same time, they are working on the road connecting our estate to the rest of the village.

18th December 2023 - They install a small grey "cab" at the entrance to the estate.

22nd December 2023 - More UG work takes place.

8th January 2024 - Engineers are on the estate moving existing (but unused) Openreach CBTs to one side before adding their own infrastructure.

9th - 19th January 2024 - Sporadic engineer visits to the estate. Towards the end of this date range they appear to be mostly testing the deployment.

31st January 2024 - This is the final time we see any rollout activity and we're told by the contractors they are performing final tests.

1st February 2024 9 AM - The VM address checker confirms availability and residents begin to place orders. I place my own order for "Gig1" later that day. I chose 17th Feb as my installation date.

1st to 9th February 2024 - VM representatives conduct sales calls to residents across the estate.

6th February 2024 - My pre-installation work is carried out externally. They did knock the door out of courtesy and this enabled me to discuss where I preferred the brown external box. They proceed to blow fibre from the house to a DP down the road.

16th February 2024 AM - A VM engineer turns up to perform last checks at the external box before my installation the next day.

16th February PM - I get a cryptic text from a mobile number informing me that my "cable re-pull appointment" has been moved forward to 8am the next morning.

17th February 9 AM - Comex2000 engineers arrive and inform me the initial pre-install was done incorrectly and they need to blow new fibre to a different DP in the other direction.

17th February 2 PM - My internal installation takes place.

(Note added later - I was initially limited by the Gigabit NIC on the device above but I have since swapped this out for a 2.5 Gbe NIC)

TL;DR - From the very first indication Nexfibre were deploying XGS-PON on our estate to being able to place orders with VM took 52 days (including the break for Christmas and New Year)

If that's bored you then apologies, I know we get a lot of questions about timelines and while I fully appreciate every rollout is different I figured someone might find the above interesting.

52 days! I am on day 151 since we had a letter through the door telling us they would be laying the fibre in my street. Glad you have a service though, looking forward to ordering (eventually) myself.

I was shocked at how quickly they deployed their rollout. As I WFH I had a birds-eye view and they went at some pace. Take Christmas and New Year out of the equation and they effectively had it all done in closer to 40 days.

Oh and 125 since I watched the fibre get trenched past my front door :)

Surprisingly VM/Nexfibre seemed to pop out of nowhere for me. Around last summer they did some work on the side road right behind my house, but completely forgot - then last month we had a leaflet posted through the door saying VM was available. Pretty much doubted it until I checked the website, and there was 1gig packages available to order. Had a little scout up the sideroad and noticed there was grey cabinets, which according to street view have been there since at least September (so around the time I saw them doing the works - which was just a one day thing).

Had it installed about 3 weeks ago now and honestly haven't had a problem. Openreach are allegedly installing their fibre here "by March 2024", but realistically the fact that VM use XGS-PON and not just GPON it's already at an advantage in terms of future proofing. Now on symmetrical 1gig as well, which is more than anything Openreach can offer right now as well. I doubt we'll get any community fibre around here anytime soon, so it's honestly my best option and cannot complain one bit!

At least Openreach says yours is "by March 2024". The best Openreach are telling us is "by December 2026"! Though i guess i should be grateful we're back on Openreach's list. We started off as on the list, then dropped off, only to be re-added again in late 2023.

Trooli is rolling out in the area but have not provisioned for our property and have said they don't plan to due to the pole feeding our property (our next door neighbour is able to sign-up with Trooli) not being one they're including in there plans (assuming PIA related). Though i did see them pulling fibre outside the front of the property, and past the pole feeding us. Interestingly, our next door neighbour can sign-up with Trooli

As i mentioned earlier in this thread, Virgin/Nextfibre works have gone on recently (according to One.Network etc). In fact, back in November, they were parked up outside our perimeter wall one night with workmen up and down. More work appears to happen (though not as close to our property) in the next week. so i can only hope that something is happening, and that this may be why Openreach have suddenly re-evaluated and said we're back on their plans.

Mine was originally "by December 2026" up until about 2-3 weeks ago - which ironically was the same time I had VM installed! Regardless, XGS-PON is better infrastructure than what Openreach are using anyway, so win win. Just a shame VM can't lower their prices a little, althogh I imagine with how much community fibre is going and how much lower their prices are it'll probably go down a little eventually.

Also remember NexFibre/VMO2 intend to wholesale their XGS-PON network in time so hopefully in a couple of years time we'll have other ISPs/CPs to choose from in addition to VM.

They have no plan for my area so it's a Virgin Media HFC monopoly, some areas have FTTC but we're limited to ADSL 😂

Fingers crossed! I'm more than happy paying for 1gig symmetrical right now! Will be interesting to see how many ISPs will hop over and use VM infrastructure though, especially in full fibre areas - especially seeing as how much better future proofed it is as well, and already able to provide 2gig symmetrical (and eventually up to 10gig).

Like you, I'm happy with the costs but it just seems so difficult if you need to contact VM for any reason which is why I hope other ISPs join the party soon.

From a technical viewpoint, I can't fault XGS-PON at all.
