Since Thursday of last week, We have been having constant problems with Our Connection With Nildram, The router Will constantly Drop the ADSL signal and Retrain. Sometimes it is constant So we can not connect at all, Other times it can happen every 2-3 minutes.

After phoning nildram On friday night(when I was first made aware of this problem) I went through all of the normal test's and checks(reset the modem, made sure it was in the Master Socket, changed filters etc etc) and The problem was still there.

On Sunday however, The service Appeared to return, the router was holding the signal, but it was Incredibly slow. Orur speed is normally around 1.5 meg, but the average Speed I was geting back from www.speedtest.net was around 250kbs Sometimes it was coming out higher nearer the 400kb's Mark, but a lot of the time it was giving me a speed of just 68kbs. All though this however, My upload speeds were a constant 250kbs, which is what I would have expected, Since yesterday however It is now back to constantly dropping the signal(every 30 seconds or so now)

We are now at the point where we need to get a BT engineer round to have a look at the line, But i am reluctant to do this, Just in case there is something else causing the problem which isnt line related. So i am asking you if you can shed some light on this situation as to what the propblem might be, and maybe Suggets other things to try too get our connection back. The only thing we have not tried at the moment is a different Router. And we have tested the connection using a wireless, and wired connection

try a different router or test yours in a friends who is ot having any problems.

If you have a modern NTE5 master socket you can temporarilly disconnect any hard wired telephone extension sockets you have by removing the lower panel on the master socket (they should be wired into the back of the removable panel) and plugging the router into the test socket behind it, this will rule out your own telephone extensions as a possible cause.

Borrow or swap routers with a friend for a day including the routers power supply unit and telephone lead, in case yours is faulty.

You could also disconnect the router and try listening to the phone for any significant amount of crackling - I think the number for the quiet line test is 17070

I'm assuming you're on a fixed speed 1 to 2Mbps connection rather than 8Mbps given the 250Kbps upload. Either way give some of the suggestions above a try and also take a look through our little connection tips guide, which summarises a lot of common tweaks:

http://www.ispreview.co.uk/articles/adsltips

The speeds you’re receiving can appear indicative of a faulty line, especially if it’s based off one of BT’s older fixed-line (standard model) 1 or 2Mbps IPStream ADSL products. On the other hand ISP congestion or a problem with the router could be to blame, it might be worth running the BT Speedtester separate from your ISP to find out (check above link for help on that, it’s one of the tips).

Ok, Still having problems. I tried to do the BT speed check last night but just came back with errors everytime. Again It seemed to be stable, but incredibly slow until about 10pm Last night, where once again it started Dropping the signal.

As far as I know The service we Have is a fixed speed service, So it's 1.5mb. The master socket in our house is an old style socket, so i cant remove the faceplate and connect straight into it either.

The quiet line test, I Did that And the line sounded quiet, so im guessing that is ok.

One last thing, We have a phone connected to the same line through an extension socket, During the night we got a phone call and we started getting a noise through it, Like data rnning through the line. We replaced Both the filters with completly different filters to see if we could stop it, But the weird thing was, when i checked the modem whilst this was happening, It was trying to connect again.

More and more it's looking like a router problem, so i am getting a friend to bring his router up and will see what happens from there. Thanks for your help so far guys, Will update when Im a bit further on :)

p.s Slow internet really does ruin your day :(

Modem noise on the line when it isn't caused by a dud filter, is often a sign of a high resistance fault - usually a poor / corroded connection somewhere along the line.

Still it is best to try another router if you can get hold of one to be on the safe side.

Recently I read where someon had BT out and it was a problem in the master socket corroded wire since you say yours is an old one pre ADSL perhaps the fault is there.

So, A month and a Half since the problem first appeared, and I am still no further forward. I tried a new router on the line, and the problem was as bad as ever, So we got an engineer out on tuesday, however, it decided it wanted to work on tuesday so Nothing was done.

Since tuesday, constant retrains, so Engineer back out again. Today, Engineer comes in, Cuts a couple of wires in the house, tries a couple of things and it seemed to be working again. But no, Its back to the same problem once more, Incredibly slow or just cutting out all together.

It diesn't help that I have already spent an hour on the phone to nildram this morning, Only for them to turn around and tell me I need to waiit until after six before they call BT because the problem is laready logged. Im seriously considering Just canceling my service now, I have spent more time on the Phone to Nildram at this point then I have on the internet

Problem is finally fixed after 3 open reach visits, Eventually they replaced my master socket, and discconected one our extensions and it seems to be fine now.
