noisy line? only 512k available

hi,

I have recently installed a bt line (had to pay 126 installation charge. engineer came round to install...all well and good)

I have had the line active for 2 weeks. It was fine until wednesday and after that the line became noisy whenever I try to make calls I get some static interference.

I also ordered the mid sky broadband pack on friday and they said they will only be able to provide a speed upto 512k.

I have been reading a few other threads and seems that a noisy line will affect adsl line speed. Is that right?

I think there might be a link between the noise in the line and sky only being able to offer me 512k.

Is there something I can do to improve the adsl line speed?
Should I contact BT to ask about the line noise?
will they charge me a callout fee after me paying them 126 for a brand new line?

any advice would be appreciated

thanks

sagar

If you have noise on the line when talking yes then BT need to sort it become a thorn in their side to get it sorted...

A friend of mine could get only 500 - 750k out of his BT ADSL line.
Line slightly noisy but nothing to worry about. After 11 phone calls to India plus a letter to BT HQ (which was forwarded on to India) an engineer eventually turned up to discover the drop wire feed to the house low insulation and corroded on the distribution pole.
Cleared that problem and speed increased to 2mb.

ok....
I will contact bt to see if they can come and sort the noise out.

does anybody know if there will be a charge? I would like to avoid one if possible.

for the noise on voice line should be no charge can always try another phone see if your phone is at fault.

tried using neighbours phone
still get line noise.

anyways got on the phone with bt(in India I think...all indian accents) and they told me all the steps to go through.
disconnect all the stuff etc only connect one phone to main socket. told them I did that but it still happening. the cs insisted I do that again thinking that would mean I would have to disconnect the phone and he wouldn't have to deal with me...little did he know I was calling from my mobile.

so I told him ok hold on while I do this...he told me I would have to disconnect to do the test. I told him no. I called you from my mobile.
And went through the steps he told me to do so.

he had to escalate my problem to a higher level as he couldn't do anything else.

transferred to london. the guy I talked to was more understanding and we exhausted all the solutions we could have done over the phone.
he sending an engineer round on saturday.
woopti woo

hopefully that will sort out noise problems and also increase the broadband speed available.

will let you know what happens and if the engineer actually shows up.
spent over and hour on the phone with them but seems like it was worth it.

I guess its a bit of a hit and miss who you get customer service wise. sometimes you get people who couldn't care less if your line wasn't working and at other times you get people who genuinely care and go to great lengths to give you a brilliant service.

true good luck make sure you offer him a coffee and biscuit helps to get that little extra special work.. :D

LOL:laugh:

The speed that sky see is only an estimate based on the length of the line,
so the speed on the adsl checker for sky will still be the same after the engineer has been out, the only way to really find out what your line is capable of is to get broadband and then you will see the actual speed you can get. Check this and then tell us your distance from the exchange.

There are a few things you can do, such as trying BT's line noise test and installing a filtered faceplate. We give a bit more details about those two here:

Also, if you stick your phone number into our Broadband Checker then what 'Estimated Line Speed' results do you get for Standard ADSL and ADSLMAX?

Posting your router stats might also help, if you have them.
