noob alert; NAT

How do I know if my router uses NAT? The user manual and the box doesnt mention it.

if ur computer get a private range ip eg 192.168.0.0 , 10.0.0.0 or 172.16.0.0 them 0 can be any number.

if u share ur internet connection chances are ur using NAT

The manual calls it DCHP. is that what you mean?

Basically it assigns ip adresses to the pc's/mac's on your home network, normally you will give the dhcp server a starting ip and maybe a subnet of 255.255.255.250. So when you turn on a machine, it talks to the router and gets given an ip, subnet and the default gateway.

default gateway = router ip

is that clear?

Just bring up a command window (cmd.exe) and type "ipconfig" to get your connection details e.g.

Code:
C:\Documents and Settings\root\Desktop\HexEd>ipconfig

Windows IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

        Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : lan
        IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.64
        Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
        Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.254
