Nothing with beeps

Can anyone help me solve this problem I have?

When I power on my PC I immediately get a long beep which keeps repeating about every two seconds. The PC will NOT boot up at all and on screen is "NO SIGNAL" I checked the manual on beeps which states "DRAM"
I have 3x 512k DDR400 which I have taken out and used each one on its own.
I've taken out the graphics card and replaced.
Taken out the modem and replaced.
Checked all cables but the damn thing still beeps.

Anyone else had this problem or do you just know what the problem is anyway.

I always experience exactly the same after messing about with a particular ECS motherboard.
The problem is difficulty in getting any video card to seat firmly in the card slot (I can’t remember if it’s a PCI or AGP slot).

The cards defiantly appear to seat correctly, so I eventually came to the conclusion that one or more of the contacts in the slot is a bit iffy, therefore I just keep reinserting the card and wriggling it about until such time the machine will boot up – and then its always okay until the next time someone messes with it..
I have cleaned the contacts but unfortunately it made no difference.

BTW, do make sure that the bottom of the video card front plate isn’t fouling on anything and thereby stopping it being pushed all of the way down into the card slot – on some cards I’ve needed to cut about 2mm from the bottom of the front plate before the card would seat correctly.

The cause of your problem might not be the same as mine, but nevertheless checking the seating of the video card might help.
Good luck.

Did you try different slots with each bit of ram? Very occasionally its the slots which get damaged.

Didn't try that but I will.

what make and model of mainboard is it?

Gigabyte GA-7N400 Pro2
with
nVIDIA FX5700 256mb DDR RAM (AGP)

I have also got a similar problem using a Gigabyte Motherboard 915P model with two 512K memory sticks.
It opertaes OK once started and left on standby while not in use, but if switched off the beeps return. When switched off for the night the beeps can return at anytime during the night. In order to avoid this I have to uplug at the mains and start the whole procedure the next morning.
However, if I give the the computer a few thumps with my fist all is then well and I can switch it on.
The manual's troubleshooting suggests power. What is meant by such help I am not sure.

I know the beeps signify a ram error but a couple of things that might be worth trying are checking the cpu fan is running ok
checking your memory in another pooter if possible

Taking out all cards except graphics

trying an old graphics card if possible

There does not appear to be any faq's on gigabytes website ref this problem!!

Had you moved the system when it happened or did it just not boot one day?

All fans ok
Took out ALL cards and replaced
I've no old graphics card but could use the wives
According to the handbook, DDR ram will not work with just one stick, so done everything possible there.
I did install a new sata HDD a few days before but everything was working fine, and I never moved it once everything was in place.
As regards the problems, I did unplug the HDD just in case, but same problem, so I don't think thats the problem.
Still getting the damn beeps though

I hate computers :D or they hate me!

Took my PC to a repair shop, and talking to the guys there, we established that it's the motherboard that's knackered (Northbridge) they said.
They came to that conclusion by asking is the light by the ram "amber or green"
When I told them it was amber, they both looked at each other and said "northbridge, your board's knackered" :crap:

Time to start shopping again!

Hi Butler,
The reason you have the problem is because the mother board is set up to use the onboard graphics. With out this you will not beable to setup another graphics card. As the on board connecter has been pulled off, unless it can be repaired, the mother board is now useless.

sorry to hear that..what you going to replace it with?

Just bought exactly the same model off ebay (brand new) so should be a direct replacement without the need of formatting the HDD again. £50 including postage.

Cheers for all your help.

Butler, Try taking out the mobo battery for a few minutes, then put it back in and try again.

You never know, the default option might be auto for graphics! (thus detecting the card in the PCI slot).

Worth a go.
