NTL can see you!

A chap at work with NTL BB was having probs with his pc, so he called NTL.

NTL were able to advise him how to sort his problem out very easily because they had direct access to his pc through the BB connection. They were able to see what he could see on his pc and without any extra software being installed.

Does anyone know about this?

Not really the correct forum for this, but anyway..

Do you know if the computer was one leased out by NTL or if it's his own system? There are many reasons why this could be possible, both legitimately and not so.

I did not post this in the NTL forums as I wanted as many people as possible to the story.

The pc was a Compaq and the chap owned it. It had recently been upgraded but not by NTL or anyone associated with NTL.

Well, can I just say something. There is such a thing as REMOTE DESKTOP installed by DEFAULT on all XP Systems. All the tech guy needs is a guest account and walla he can see the screen. Or even better is the MSN add-on 'Remote Assistance'

still the client has to give him access to him he cannot just get in straight away unless he agreed to the invitation.

but i guess we arent as clever as you and we have never used remote desktop or even heard of it.

It's called Broadband Medic and is installed as part of the ntl installer, nothing untoward and it doesn't give the kind of complete access described, it's just a tool to aid in tech support. Is not compulsory and can be opted out of pretty easily.

It only gives access to browser and network settings as far as I know, and even then I think it's read only.

Nothing to see here, move on :)

Did he have the program BBmedic installed as this gives NTL access to help you sort out your PC.

Kits, the guy is a complete novice - He has no idea!

However, its interesting to hear about this software, especially when people think they are safe online.

BBMedic is pretty nailed down, and again offers no access to anything useful to Mr Hacker really even if they could circumvent the protection, whcih is well beyond the abilities of anyone who is likely to be interested in a home user's PC.

I trialed this software its very good especially for those who are a novice on the computers and internet. It also saves the call to CS as you can access support online. They do nothing but help you to get the problem solved. Infact it gives you almost everything I suggested once on the forums @NTHW.com to help stop the long wait on hte phones.

I can assure you they ask your permission before they rectify the problem when they spot it.

RRU iof he is that paraniod he shouldn't be on the internet

Kits, he is not paranoid and did not seem concerned about the issue, however, I was for other users hence the mention on here. :)

If anyone would like more information about BBmedic I am willing to answer specific questions of what I found while using it.

I still have it on my pc even though I don't use it just for teh messages about the email server. Everytime there is a problem a box pops up telling you they are and the engineeers are looking into it.
