ntl/Virgin Set Top Box & Vista

My broadband connection is with ntl/Virgin and via my tv set top box. The ethernet cable runs into a USB adaptor, then into a USB port on my PC. With Win XP, installation of the OS automatically detected the broadband set up.

On installing Vista Home Premium, there was no broadband connection detected. I tried unplugging the USB connector and putting the ethernet cable straight into the back of my PC.......still no connection detected.

Customer support told me that ntl/Virgin didn't offer Vista support. Surely Vista is 'up to date' enough to install automatically, since XP did.

Any help appreciated.

According to the help section on the website,
http://www.virginmedia.com/help/compatible/

it will not work with Vista.
Therefore you might have to revert back to the previous OS.

Extracts from the help page:

Q) Do Virgin Media internet products work with Windows Vista ?
A) Currently Virgin Media internet products do not work with Windows Vista. PCguard and Netguard users in particular should be aware that these security products will not work with Windows Vista and bear in mind that they will need to source alternative PC security if they are upgrading to Vista.

Q) Will Virgin Media offer technical support for Windows Vista?
A) Currently the technical support centres cannot offer support for any version of Windows Vista. We will be offering technical support for Virgin Media in future please check this website for updates.

It's sad but true that a lot of hardware and software still has not been correctly updated for Vista, including many notable mainstream products.

This is a sorry state of affairs and wasn't so prominent during WinXP's launch because WinXP was essentially Win2000, which had been around for a couple of years prior. Under the hood Vista is quite different to those and thus initially harder to develop for.

Sooner or later ISP's and related hardware will catch up, yet companies that fail to adapt their services and support will suffer in the long run by having to deal with an increased quantity of complaints. The only thing you can do is to keep prodding your ISP to get themselves clued up.
