even if you force use to 2G? (oh wait you can't force network technology on iPhones)
With future-proof networks now in place and ongoing investments helping to further expand them, next year we’ll start work to move almost all remaining traffic away from the 2G network.

Unlike our 3G network, we won’t be turning 2G off completely. In fact, we expect to continue operating it for several years and it will play an important role in carrying emergency calls in more remote areas without 4G coverage. We’ll also use it to support data traffic for smart energy meters, contributing to the UK’s transition to a lower-carbon economy.

Sounds like restrictions at sim level to me.

Good news coming from O2 than especially as it's a Vodafone host area, my point being I would have expected this being more of a priority for a O2 host area.

Looking forward to seeing more investment in their network both nationally and locally 👍

It's unwind so effectively O2 host
That I wasn't aware of, I know there are areas that are unwind but they seem to be few and far.

That's why I said what I said as I took the view that it was a Vodafone host area and therefore wouldn't have been as vital to O2 as their own host areas but I await to be corrected on that point.

With Beacon 4.1 though, are both Vodafone and O2 slowly unwinding from the Cornerstone agreement and thus we see a lot more investment from both in the other's main region of control? Eg O2 investing more into the Western part of the UK and likewise having Vodafone invest more into the Eastern part of the UK?

It's still very much welcomed though to see more investment coming from O2 after all, they have a poor reputation to get rid of eg SlowO2 etc

I don't believe the areas being unwound in Beacon 4.1 significantly differ from that in Beacon 3 (top 20 cities give or take) from 2019. That's why I'm sceptical of 4.1, why will 2025 onwards be different to 2019-2024?

Still painfully slow in the city centre and unusable on a match day.

Hence why I left and went on EE.

I know this is an O2 forum and about to ask an EE question 😃...

But, how has your experience been with EE as your main line now? Have they sorted Halesfield out yet?

It is interesting you ask that!

It feels like I am on wifi when pottering around the town on EE. It is noticeably more responsive.

I still have an O2 sim on pay as you go as my CTIL backup and there have been a couple of places I have been, one being a pub and the second being Aldi where there has been nothing on EE and O2 has usable service.

The Halesfield mast hasn't gone down for nearly 8 weeks now.

I am paying more now for EE compared to O2 but it is unlimited and has EU roaming. The big difference for me is rarely do I rely on the O2 sim now.

When O2 was my primary, I was flicking over to EE on a daily basis.

O2's performance in Wolverhampton (ironic) was a big reason I left.

On one hand there's a definite improvement around Wolves, on the other hand here's my local mast

I have had some great speeds around the city, especially on SA. Well above 700Mbps.

Unfortunately they haven’t actually tackled the capacity issue in the city centre.

They need to build another site or deploy micro cells…..or both.

I still feel like the level of progress on VMO2 is snails pace. The VM merger was supposed to "Supercharge the UK".

So far 3 years has passed, the mobile network still sucks in many places and on the VM side, CS is still abysmal with XGS upgrades still yet to materialize.

Three are no saint, but I feel they've done more. BT group too.

Out of interest, by what metric do you reckon Three have done more than BT?

I did tried Googling Beacon 4.1 but couldn't find anything :/

Ah that’s good to hear, my experience is similar and I find EE are great around Telford.

You mentioned Wolverhampton, is that still decent on EE? Are you using a SA or NSA plan?

Personally at least, I have seen much more action from 3 than BT. They've added n78 5G to almost all the masts near me, alongside building a million PoWs in the town centre.

EEs network has become somewhat stagnant here now, it's all dual B3 4G+. Three now beats the hell out of them pretty much everywhere I go due to B28 and all the 5G from the PoWs.
